Loudoun, to give my tes- y opposition to the senti- d in Francis Scott Key's poem, pangled Banner,” 1 have received a large number of letters and inquiries, many expressing gratitude for my resistance to the evil suggestions of hatred, revenge, and the continued contemplation of the horrors of war, with its “rockets’ red glare,” “bombs burst- ing in air,” “the gloom of the grave,” and “their foul footsteps’ pollution,” the mental aad audible expression of which has perpet- uated war, until the evil elements, or thoughts, which compose the so-called ma- terial man, culminated in the war of 1914- 1918. Mortals are to-day suffering from the dire effects of hatred of their brother man. Other letters, which 1 have received, evi- dently from writers who entertained these warring elements of the carnal man, are in bitter opposition to my plea for the brother- hood of man, and they inquire why I spent $16,000 of my resources to advertise my re- sistance to the words of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” which they seem to think expresses the sentiments of Americans. God forbid that America or any nation should ever be ruled by qualities of the carnal mind, which have governed Europe, and have resulted in her present ruin and devastation. There are objectors, who ask why I have_spent large sums of money to advertise the Holy Bible as the Word of God. They inquire, “Why, Mrs. Stetson, did you spend $179,000 to Ering this teaching before the people?” To them I reply, I do this because the textbook of Christian Science, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, or Christ's Christianity, has revealed to me the Science of being, which is a demonstrable Science, as provable as the seience of geometry. Another writer urges me to unite with her in erecting a hospital for the healing of a disease, which she says is considersd incura- ble. 1 ask, why should I do this, when for 38 years I have never taken one drop of medicine, having found Christian Science,— Christ’s remedy,—equal to every demand which has been made upon it. My corre- spondent is most kindly and charitable in her desire to erect a hospital, in which the suf- ferers from disease, which is wholly mental in eausation, can be cared for. So long as sin, the belief of life in matter, which is the cause of all disease, remains, there must be refuges for those who are afflicted, who do not know the Science of Christ’s healing power. Progress is fast revealing the cause of all sickness, sorrow, suffering, and death, and is proving that the origin inheres in the carnal, or mortal mentality, and that the only genuine cure is in the fact, that humanity must be dispossessed of evil thoughts, which constitute the Adam so-called man, in whom “all die.” To-day I stand as a witness to the healing power of the Mind of Christ, and, God-im- pelled by the ever-present Christ, and love for my brother man, I call to all humanity, to awake from the dream of life in matter, and put on the Mind of Christ. Humanity is being aroused to the Science of life,—man’s unity with his creator, Spirit, eternal Life, Love, and Truth, and i¢ learning that man is a mental, spiritual idea of eternal Life and Love; that he pos: s the spiritual qualities of the source of his being,—God. Christ Jesus understood his relation to the Principle of existence, When he declared, “I and my Father are one,” but “My Father is greater than 1” (John 3 He also declared that his di the Father, even as 20-26.) It is apparent to the twentieth century thinker that man is wholly mental,—that he reflects the Principle of his being, eternal Life and Love, or, not yet awakened to his divine sonship with the Father, he is governed by the dream of life as existent in matter. But Science is revealing the spiritual fact, that “man is not material; he is spiritual.” “There is w0 matter.” (Mary Baker Eddy.) 1 have resisted the evil suggestions of hatred and revenge, expressed in Francis S Key’s poem, “The Star-Spangled Banner,” ¥nowing that they perpetuate war, and I “shall con- tinoe to resist this anthem, until the banner af Jove for God and my brother man is im~token-of -everlasting victory, Truth and himself. (John xvii, Love will finally provide a spiritual anthem for America, whose flag is the Stars and Stripes, not the “Star-Spangled Banne may the love, peace and joy, which th them shall convey from the Father of all men, extend throughout the natiens, and establish universal brotherheod, or divine democracy, under one God and one law. All will then unite in paeans of praise to the God of Life and Love. “Nation shall not lift up sword against nation, reither shall they learn war any more.” (Isaiah ii., 4.) Years ago I was taught by my Christian parents that the Holy Bible 1s the Word of God. When 1 read the Secriptures, thexe seemed to be an influence pervading them, which held me to faith in their teaching, but 1 could never understand why I could not find God, my Father, as my help in time of trouble. Yet there was never a doubt, but that the Bible was God's Word. The mission of Christ, in healing the sick, feeding the multitude, raising the s:{iead, cast- ing out devils (evil thoughts), and preaching the Gospel, strongly appealed to me, and con- vinced me that the Master understeod his relation to God, Spirit, the source of his being, and that he possessed a power which God bestowed, and which no other persen on earth had discerned; and that later, Christ Jesus demonstrated this poewer in his victery over the malice of his enemi the Adam-belief, or anti-Christ. Faith held me to a blind wor- ship of Chri Christianity, and I streve earnestly to obey the law of righteousness. But spiritual understanding was lacking, until my attention was called to the spiritual in- terpretation of the Werd of Ged,—the Holy Bible,—as found in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy. The phrase, “Key to the Scriptures,” aroused me to ponder, Wiat is the functien of a key? Is it not to unlock a receptacle, where treas- ures have been hidden from view? This “Key” was offered as a means to unlock the hidden treasures of truth, which are contained in the Scriptures, and have been hidden for centuries, veiled by the material sense of scholastic theologians, whose study of the letter which kills, has missed the spirit of Truth, which giveth life. In 1884 I sought Mary Baker Eddy, the author of this book, Science and Health, and began my investigation of the Science of be- ing. As I continued to use this “Key,” under the guidance of my Leader and Teacher, Mary Baker Eddy, my spiritual senses were awakened, and spiritual light revealed to me treasure after treasure, until, to my faith, I added understanding of the spiritual interpre- tation of that which prophets had grodaivmd, throughout the ages, and which Christ Jesus had demonstrated,—namely, the power of spiritual thought-force, or the Christ-mind, over evil, Adaméc thoughts, the cy of love over hate and fear, of life over the claim of death. When my great Leader and Teacher, Mary Baker Eddy, sent me to New York City 38 years ago “to establish the Christianity of Christian Science,” my only reliance was the Bible, with Mrs. Eddy’s k, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, and this “Key” has continued to open the way te an understanding of the allness of Life and Leve and the nothingness and unreality of matter. During 17 consecutive years, in _the pulpit of my church, First Church of Christ, Sei- entist, New York City, I proved befere the world, my willingness to suffer with Christ, that I might “reign with him,” for schelastic theologians utterly ignored my teaching and 2y continued struggle for Christ’s Chris- tianity, or the qualities of the Mind of Christ. I am a living witness to the power of love over hate, envy, jealousy, ingratitude, the po- tency of good over evil thoughts and acts. 1 have continued to cross swords with these mental elements, which are embodied in seem- ing fleshly personalities; and every victory of love over revenge, malice, and envy,—the ele- ments which put Joseph in the pit and which hung Jesus on the cross,—every effort to de- stroy my divine individuality, was met during those 17 years, until I could say, “with the Spirit and with the understanding also,” gained through knowledge of the “Key to the Scriptures,” Science and Health, “I am per- suaded th ither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principal: nor powers, nor things pres- ent, nor things to come, nor )uigh:,bnor depth, nor any other creature,” shall be able to sepa- rate me “from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans viii., 38.) with thine in unity and love. From Science and Heaith wcith Key to the Scrip- tures, by Mary Baker Eady: Refercing to the materiality of the age, Jesus said: ‘“The hour cometh, and now s, when the true ‘worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth.” Again, foresecing the persecution which would attend the Science of Spirlt, Jesus said: “They shall put you out of the syna- gogues; vea the time cometh, that whosover Killeth you will think that he doeth God servioe ; and these things will they do unto you, because they bave not known the Father nor me.” (P. 31.) stupefying illusions, the werld is : of infancy, ‘dreaming away fold the facts of existence; but spiritual sense lifts human consciousness into eternal Truth. Humanity Vances slowly out of sinning sense into spiritual understanding;_unwillingness to learn all things rightly, binds Christendom with chains. (Pp. 85, ) 96. “He uttered Hic voice, the earth melted.” This Scripture indicates that all matter will disappear before the supremacy of Spirit. (P. 97.) Jesus established in the Christian era the prece- dent for all Christianity, theology, and healing. (P, 138.) Eternal Truth is changing the universe. As During 38 years I have preached in New York City from pulpit and press and through my published books, which contain every ez- perience through which I have passed in my effort to preserve genuine Christian Science, as promulgated by Mary Baker Eddy. As I have studied the words ef prophets and the life and teaching of Christ Jesus and his dis- ciples and apostles, so must all future seekers for Truth study the Holy Bible, Science and Health with Key to the Seriptures, and other writings of Mary Baker Eddy. They will learn through my experiences, all of which I have given freely to the world in my books, published by G. P. Putnam’s Sons, 2 West 45th Street, New York City, namely, Rem:nis- cences, Sermens and Correspondence, 1884- 1913, (1282 pages); Vital Issues in Christian Science, with Facsimile Letters of Mary Baker Eddy, (405 pages); Poems; My Spiritual Aeroplane; Greetings and a Message to the Dear Children; Sermons and Other Writings on Christian Science, (mere than 1300 ). 1 repeat, by the study of the Bible, Mrs. Eddy’s writings, and my volumes, future seek- ers for Truth will find the way to a dem- onstration of perfect love, and there will be no further necessity for my continued personal instruction. Through the increase. of my spiritual senses, I shall be continually reveal- ing the beauties of God’s universe, and shall catch glorious glimpses of the “new heaven and . . . new earth,” for I am convinced that “the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them. and be their God. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things [thoughts which caused them] are passed away.” (Revelation xxi.) For years I have earnestly striven to awaken humanity to the Life-Principle of being, which the Master, at his first appearing, in con- quering the dream of so-called sin and death, proved, through his understanding of God, as the source of all life. He proved him- self to be the Son of God, or the reflection of eternal Life, as the ray reflects the sun, from which it is inseparable, Spiritual understand- ing revealed to John this inseparability from the one creator, when he said: “Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it-doth not yet MARY BAKER G. Progress takes off human shackies. . . - All things are created spirftually. Mind, not mmatter, is the creator. Love, the divine Principle, is the Father and Mother of the universe, inciud- ing man. (P. 236.) —MARY S In January, 1909, Mrs. Eddy published a mes- sage in The Christion~ Sciemce Semtimel, from which 1 quote the following: When my dear brethren in New York desire to build higher . . . they must begin on a wholly spiritual foundation, is no othe~ BAKER EDDY. than which there Spirit is infinite; therefore Spirit ia ali. “There er’ is not omly the axiom of true clence, but it is the only basis upon s Science can be demonstrated. rs. had written, some years before this time, the statement that “Material organization is requisite in the beginning: but when it has done its work, the purely Christly method of teaching and preaching must be adopted.” (Mis- celianeous Writings, p. 359.) 1In 1909, Mrs. Eddy decided that / had grown spiritually, to the point where I was ready to adopt “the purely Christly method of teaching and preaching,” and there- fore her call, to rise out of materi] organization and begin to build “on a wholly spiritual founda- tion,”” was addressed omly to her ‘‘dear brethren in New York,” and her only reply was received from me. I greatly desired the Mind of Christ, and I re- plied to Mrs. Eddy’s message, that 1 would obey her call “on a wholly spiritual foundation' ; and during the past 15 years, I have been proving Christ’s Christianity, by obeying her teaching, in the demonstration of a “‘wholly spirit- tial" consciousness, where “Spirit is infinite; therefore 5; is all”; and 1 shall continue to prove the spiritual fact of being, until the noth- ingness of material sense, and the aliness of the Mind of Christ, is revealed, —AUGUSTA E. STETSON. appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.” Christ has been apprehended by many in this century, and will reveal himself in due time, as “King of kings, and Lord of lords.” Knowing the cause of sin, sorrow, suffering, and so-called death, and pomini!s remedxy in spiritual understanding of the Holy Bible, gained through the “Key to the Scriptures,” Science and Health, 1 am moved to share with all mankind my costly treasures of Truth, through love for Ged and for my brother man. I have counted not the cost, either in money, in consecration, or in the tortures of menmtal erucifizion, which I have endured from the envy of anti-Christ, and from all who oppose divine love. They who would reign with Christ must be vel{lm ing to “suffer with him.” (II Timothy ii, 12.) Eventually all must wrestle with the forces of universal evil, so- gfi!fl.& which claims to oppose God and His To-day, after 38 years of preaching, teach- ing and demonstrating the spiritual power of Truth and Love, man’s divine birthright, 1 am moved to present visible evidence of the value of the Science of being, the understand- ing of the allness of God and His Christ, which has enabled me, after these many years of warfare against the forces of the so-called carnal mind, to demonstrate perfect health, strength, love, peace and joy, which are the fruits of spintual understanding. During my ministry, thousands, afflicted with so-called diseases, but who were receptive of truth, I have healed by my realization that all disease is mental,—the result of the belief of life in matter, which the “Key to the Scriptures,” Science and Health, has taught me to be the cause of so-called death. For ages the Apostle Paul has declared, “These are they who through fear of death were all their lifetime ss‘::fiu‘ to bondage.” Since the “Key to the iptures” has given me an understanding of the cause of all suffering and death, I have lmqled to destroy the qualities of so-called mortal thought in myself and for others; and up to the present time I have proved the power of the Mind of Christ. The carnal so- ulledl mind has always opposed the followers o Christ. The so-called Adam-Eve genération, which . isfound in the second chapter of Genesis, is * spiritual not the spiritual man of eternal Life, Love, and Truth. Humanity has accepted and fol- lowed this mythical Adam-Eve belief, which has resulted in continual self-annihilation. Scholastic theologians have ignored the true record of creation, given in the first chapter of Genesis, in which God made all that was made, including man, in His “image” and “likeness,” and called it “very good,” or very God, for God is All,—omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent Life, Love, and Truth, and man is His image and likeness, spiritual and eternal, and every object in the universe is a phenomenon, or idea of eternal Life and Love, which spiritual sense will gradually re- veal; for there is but one God, one universe. John the Revelator glimpsed this when he saw “a new heaven and a new earth.” This spir- itual universe remains to be revealed to all who look through spiritual lens. Ritualists have been governed by the coun- terfeit account of creation, reported in the second chapter of Genesis, in which a so-called rival creator, Jehovah, Yahwah, or “Lord God,” is announced as the author of Adam- Eve and creator of the knowledge of good and evil,—the reversal of the true manifesta- tion of Spirit, Life, Truth, and Love, our Father-Mother God. 1 repeat, the hospitals, the asylums, and the penitentiaries are filled with the fruitage of evil thinking. Two thousand years of mate- rial remedies and organizations, based on the belief of life in matter, have been unavailing. Mortals have reached the horrible conditions of this heur, in the unreal dream of human experience, because they have resisted the “Key to the Scriptures.” The children of the twentieth century, are now seeking this spiritual interpretation, or “Key” to the Holy Bible, the Word of God, for the material sense of God, man, and the universe, imparted for ages by scholastic theo- logians, has been of no avail in ovércoming the “carnal mind,” which St. Paul declared is “enmity against God.” . The Bible, when spiritually understood, is demonstrable, as Jesus the Christ proved. The second chapter of Genesis, which declares that Adam came from the ground, and that he earns his bread by the sweat of his brow, and returns to dust, must be recognized as the record ‘of an unreal belief, which our Master called “a generation of vipers,” “a murderer from the beginning .. . aliar, and the father of it.” (Matthew iii., 7; John viii.,, 44.) To-day I stand as a living witness of the demon- stration, up to this hour, of the power of love over hate, envy, and jealousy, of truth over the lie of life and intelligence In matter, which the master Metaphysician, Christ Jesus, overcame. 1 am pleading, as did our Wayshower, Christ Jesus, 0, Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them' wi are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy chil- dren together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!" (Matthew xxill., 27.) 1 long to see the coming generation escape the horrors of the Adam-Eve dream, which scholastic theologians “have ignorantly accepted and uni- versally taught. If our fathers “have eaten a sour grape.” the chiidren’s teeth must no_longer be “set on edge.’” (Jeremiah xxx., 20.) This is why I lead {n defense of Christ’s Christianity, because I proved thus far the words of my groat Leader Baker Bddy, “Clad in the human hatred cannot reach you.” (Boience and H . 571.) Life is eternal, and love is heaven, harmony, o earth, for ‘‘the earth is the Lord's’and the fuiness Uiereof.” (Psalms Our Master, Christ Jesus, asked, ‘“When the Son of Man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?" The seif-styled Modernists and Fundamentalists of this hour are in a sea of confusion because they have not undersiood the teaching of the ever- prosent Christ. who is to-day as able to speak “Peace. be still” to sinning, suffering, sorrowing humanity, as he was when he demonstrated the power with which God ha. endowed him, to eaim the winds and waves, the fears of his diseiples, on the Sea of Galilee. Let the Bible be spiritually interpreted, through a knowledge of gemuine Christian Science, as pre- mulgated by Mary Baker Eddy. They that endure unto the end of persecution for righteousness’ sake: who love “‘more for every hate,” (Mary Baker Eddy): who never lay down the sword of the Spirit, the Word of God, until, through the fulfiliing of the law of love for their enemies, they have gained a victory over the ma- terial senses. which end in fear and death,—they only ars genuine Christian Scientists, defonstrators of Christ's Christianity, which will finally bring “on earth peace, good {God's] will toward men.” (Luke ii.. 14.) I am gradually beholding the world of God's creating, through the lens of spiritual sense. its glory and beauty is rich reward for all that [ have sacrificed to bless others. Let humanity keep the Word of God, the Holy Bible, in the schools of America. with the “Key to the Scriptures,” Soience and Health. Every genuine Christian Scientist will endorse me_in this plea: every true follower of Mary Baker Eddy will struggle to preserve the teaching, which is found in Sewnce and Hasith with Key 1o the Scriptures, and Mrs. Bddy's other writings. The children of the future shall be taught the way to God, through Christ; and Christ's Chris- tianity and the operation of ‘the law of God, will open the very ‘‘windows of heaven' to future gen- erations. Mrs. Eddy declares: 1f the Bibie and Science and Health had the place in schools of learning that physiology occu- pies. they would revolutionise and reform the world, through the power of Christ.
