Heavsts International THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. O, R, S AR AR AN RN AN N AR AN R PR New Building at Hains Point to Fill Need Long Felt by Picknickers Ninety-Seven-Foot Structure to Contain Rest Rooms, Lounge, Lunchroom, Kitchen and Big Porch. The first big step in the filling of one of the greatest.needs at Hains point was taken yesterday when the concrete for the foundation of the new shelter and comfort house was poured, under the direction of Lieut. Col. Sherrill, In charge of the public bulldings and grounds. Because of the nature of the ground and the tendency of it to settle, it was decided to pour the entire base in one day that it might harden In one slab. Four concrete mixers and 2 large gang of workmen were as- sembled. The base is of reinforced concrete thirteen inches thick and containing altogether 130 yards of concrete, The weight and size of the slab guarantee that if there be any sinking, the entire house without any cracking of is estimated that the settling will total about six inches before it finally ceases. 97 Feet Long. The house will have an overall longth of ninety-seven feet and a width of 22 feet. It will consist of a main room or lounge forty-three feet long. flanked by two wings about twenty-six feet by twenty-two feet. In ons wing will be located comfort stations for both men and women and a large storage room. In the other will be a lunchroom, containing a counter where food may be purchased and also chairs and tables for those who bring r own lunches. A Kkitchen will he adjacent to the lunch room and a age room will be at- tached. 7 The wings of the building will be what lower than the center por- the latter being topped off with an ornamental railing. In front of the lounge will be a porch 43 feet by 12 feet, the roof of which will be supported by six columns. The construction is to be of brick and stucco and will entafl an outlay of_$16,000. The present lunchroom will be re- moved when the new building Is ready, which will be about July L. Need Long Felt. The need of comforj stations, & refuge from rainstorms and an ade- quate room for lunch purposes has long been felt. It is belleved that this new bullding will meet the re- quirements of picnickers and others visiting the point. Telephones also will be provided. Its construction is such that boats coming up the river will see instead of the present unsightly bullding. a dignified and neat-appearing struc- ture. , In ‘addition to the mew house, a macadam road as wide as the present road is being constructed to the club- house on the Washington channel side. “The cherry trees all the way around the drive have been moved back in preparation for the widening of the present roadway to double its present Width. Funds for the road bullding have mot been provided as vet, but they will be sought. With this plan in mind, officials thought it best to move the trees now, as each year would add to the difficulty of moving then Additional parking space will be provided, a need that will be felt more accutely this coming summer, for parking has been prohibited around the roadway at the extreme gnd of the point.
