SAVING FAITH BY DR. FRANK CRANE, Saving faith, in the common theo- logical sense, is not the subject under discussion. Whether or not a falth in a certain creed will save one’s soul shall not here be considered. But there is a kind of saving faith everybody can understand and every- body believes in. And it is not the faith you have in somebody, but the faith somebody has in you. What is meant is this: Nobody ever | idoes you any good, reaches, helps, and encourages you except the one who believes in you. The only -tonic, life-giving force that flows from man to man is ap- prectation. The benumbing, paralyzing, ening force is contempt. To despise any man is to do all in | your soul's power to ruin him. Anger, sullenness, and dislike the hammers of the soul. ¥ Scolding and petulance are the struction of children. Punishment and prisons are ptomaines of soclety. Neither the fender himself nor the people large are done any good by degrad- ing’a man to the le ast. Believe in a child ur faith shall save him, if anything can Believe in men and women and you uplifting the world, in the only it can Le uplifted ven to Lelieve in the man inside the criminal is the best way to cure crime, __And it is easy enough. For all that | is necessary, in order to have faith in any human’ being, is to understand him.
