Although on the board for a period of less than six months, Mr. Green- wood has taken an active interest in all its affalrs and was chairman of the special committee which made a comprehensive Investigation of Muz- zey's American History. Mr. Callahan’s resignation was sub- mitted to Ghief Justice McCoy of the | District Supreme Court Monday, and has not yet been accepted. He like- 1y will remain on the board until his successor is chosen. The resignation of Mr. Callahan came as a distinct surprise to his associates, to the hoard and school officials, only a few of whom had been confidentially informed of his action. He was absent from the seml-monthly meeting of the board Wednesday, and to subdue the atmos- phere of anxiety due to his failure to attend, it was announced that business affairs demanded his atten- tion. As a result Edwin C. ¢ presided. Text of Callahan Resignation. The text of Mr. Callahan's re nation follows: “I find it quite difficult to give to the service of the board of education that close attentlon 1 feel it deserves without continued embarrassment to my many business interests. There fore, 1 ask that you kindly accept my resignation as a member, to take effect at your earliest convenlence. “Please be assured of my deep appreciation of* the confidence im- posed in me by your body." —_— RITES FOR CAPT. Hart Schaffner & Marx Tuxedo, Coat and Trousers, $55 aham | ST Happy by Report The excessive value put upon money comes from the poor. Those who esteem riches most are those who do not have it The principal reason why the rich appreciate it is because the poor want it 5o much. Thus Bacon: “Cer- tainly great persons have need to Dborrow other men’s opinions to think themselves happy. When they think What others think of them, and that other men would fain be as they are, then they are happy, as it were, by report.’” But the difficulty with this philoso- | DLy Is that the rich are only amused | at it and the poor do not believe ft. ml.el{. us who are perforce humble, erefore, re; ce H 0] y a| e tramp and scribblers, show- | | endowed may rejoic. be a success in rers who'are not | olce in this, that to hls world me: trainload of useless luggage. hordes | of hollow friends, distant relatives suddenly becoming tender and solicl- | teus, *hundreds of savage looks from | the hungry crowd that want our| place. many a hand that would strike us down for pure envy, and our share | of King Solomon’s “vanity and vexa- | tion of spirit.” | | Shipping | to- | The fox in the fable w not such a foul; when you cannot get grapes it | fs a comfort to call them sour, In our poverty we can at least be, Renuinely sin hen we pray: | ve us this day our daily bread For the good God alone knows where | it is coming from, Did you e r try to separate yvour real resources of happlness from those you publish? 1f you should do this you would be surprised to find how cheap and sim- ple happiness really is. | _ The hat you wear, are you wearing it because It is the sty You think other people admire it. or because it really gives you satisfac tion? Very probably that little head- gear that no one has remarked and which you have had for two years gives you a genuine thrill, while the fantastic contraption that cost twenty times as much gives you satisfaction only because you think other people admire it. I remember once glving O. Henry a box of expensive Havana cigars, With apologles he confessed to me that he did not like them. He said: “I get a lot more satisfaction out of the cheap kind of cigars that are made in the barn."” You went to see & play the other night. Do yeu claim that you en- joyed it simply because everybody else is saying he enjoyed it? Or did the performance as a matter of fact leave you cold? How many books do you read he- cause they really interest you and how many do yon read simply be use the mob declares that they should interest you? Our dafly living would be much richer in enjoyment if we stuck a tle more closely to the things that really appeal to us and if we more time in trying to be happy than we spend in trying to make other people think we are happy. —_— MRS.
