NEW YORK, October 15.—Wall street, that is the speculative part of it, was in the main bearish as the new week began. Much was made of the fact that the average price level had broken the lows of the summer, the professional view being that this was an indication of a still lower price trend. Buts as very often happens, when the speculative crowd all thinks one way, the market moves the other. As 500D as it was seen today that real stocks were not coming out despite all the propaganda of bearishness, traders started in to cover, and this buying lifted the highly speculative industrials a point and a half to two points. The principal gains were | made in stocks of the type of Bald- win Locomotive, American Can, Davi- son Chemical, Dupont and Studebaker. Tire Cuts Cause Selling. Somo further selling otcufred rubber and tire shares on the an- nouncement that Fisk Rybber had cut price 15 per cent in grler to meet the Firestone cuts. NEW YORK, October 15.—While there wére some irregularities, par- ticularly in Industrial issues, the gen- skowed a more confident feeling. All the United States government loans were higher. % The new it ,ues of Federal Land Bank bonds were not as large as had been reported, the amount being $47.- 000,000, but the coupon rate and the offering price were about as expected. On a 4% per cent basis and entirely tax-exempt, it was confidently be- lleved that the bonds would be quickly absorbed. Forelgn Bonds Stromger. One of the reasons assigned for the recent' weakness in Liberties was the competition expected from these land bank bonds. Probably there was no connection between the two, however, and talk of the bonus, another sug- gested reason for the selling of Lib- erties, seems to have been equally unfounded. It is more probable that selling on the part of banks to supply funds for seaso requirements now as been completed. B ein Tonds showed a somewhat better tone todiy, notably the French government issues. French Citles 6s, on the other hand, were mostly un- changed. Japanese bonds were a shade better. Production ©of turpentine from crude gum for the producing season ending March 31 last by 1.219 estab- lishments totaled 22,394,137 gallons, a decrease of 8 per cent from the previous year, according to prelimi- nary_estimates made public today by the Department of Commerce.
