GOURAUD DEPARTS SURE .. FRENLY French General Grateful After Five-Week Visit for Cordial Reception. NEW YORK, August 23.—General Henry Joseph Gouraud of France, “the lion of the Argohne,” who has been touring the country for five weeks as the guest of the Rainbow Division, which was a unit in the corps commanded by him in the world war, sailed for home yesterday on the steamship France “I am sorry to leave America,” he said. “It fills me with sadness. That sadness {s relieved, however, by the knowledge that I have gained of the kind feeling America everywhere has shown me personally and to France. 1 found the soldiers who served under me five years ago the same splendid men now as thén.” A group of officers of the Rainbow Division bade him farewell and a band played the French and American national af The general was pre- sented with four volumes of clippings relating to his American trip. He was astonished at the great number {f words that had been written about him. When asked about the situation in the Ruhr the general denied that France had any intentiou of remain- ing permanently there. He sald it would be illegical to entertaim the idea of a permanent occupation, as J'rance under no conditions could assimilate the German population, and 10t to do so would make for a per- manent and lasting discord. The French only abide by the demands which were made of Ger- many after the armistice and in ac- cord with the treaty of Versailles,” he sald. “The French do not regard treaties as scraps of paper,” the gen- eral added. Lee Lewis of Northwestern University, inventor of Lewlsite and other high explosives and deadly gases used in the world war, announced that after three visits from burglars he was tired of being robbed, so he had equipped his home with a burglar alarm attached to a tear-gas bomb. “As soon as a window 1s raised or a door opened, the bomb drops to the floor,” he explained, “and I have added a’booster charge to make it explode so that it will reach every corner. Our sleeping porch is closed from the house, so the family is in no danger. All I have to do when the bomb goes off is to call the po- lice and tell them to bring an am- bulance.” HELD IN BANK THEFT.
