| DIVORCES IN PARIS French Legal Circles Annoy- _ed by Failure of U. S. Citi- zens to Use Own Courts. By the Assoclated Pres PARIS, July 24—The divorce grant- ed yesterday to Irene Castle Treman, the dancer, from Captain Robert E. Treman of Ithaca, N. Y. appears to have been arranged by mutual con- sent on the ground that he refused to observe the marital relations and upon her application. Such & method is usual in French procedure which allows divorces by reclprocal consent, unlike American law. Under French practice, it Is recognized to be entirely correct for the Lusband and wife to determine upon a dlvorce when the only solu- tion of thelr domestic difficulty ap- pears to them to be a dissolution of their marriage. In such cases the judge gives the applicants a certain perfod of time in Which to reconcile their differences. If, when that period elapses, they re- main unreconciled, the decree is granted If other conditions are ful- ed. Inquiries among Am in Paris indicate that Americ more difficulty in_ getting here than would be supposed from the number of them granted. One- third of the judges being Catholics, disapprove of divorce upon religlous ground; another third is described &s regarding with disfavor applica- tions of foreigners for divorce, and the remaining third of the bench look upon the matter with indifference. Sentiment in legal circles of Paris is developing strongly against the French courts being utllized for the convenlence of Americans who are unwilling to resort to their own courts, preferring to establish legal domicile in France to claim the rights ;un accrue to them under French aw.
