Because of some misunderstanding concerning certain actions of the re- cent Presbyterian general assembly Rev. Dr. Wallace Radcliffe of the {New York Avenue Presbyterian | Church has presented the following: “As to the theory of evolution its only action was secondary and in re- lation to the general subject of Chris- tian education. It recognized a fre- quent and growing abuse in many | schools and colleges to use certain phases of this theory in direct antag | onism to Christianity and even to anx theistic belief, and adopted by a pra tically unanimous vote the following resolution: ‘Resolved, that synods and pre byterfes within whose bounds Pres byterian—supported acadamies, co | leges and training schools are locate are hereby instructed to exercise car | tul oversight over the instructic | given in such institutions and tha: synods and presbyteries withhold their official approval from sych acad emies, colleges and training schoo | where any teaching or instruction | given which seeks to establish a ma i terialistic evolutionary philosophy of | life which disregards or attempts tc | discredit the Christian faith.’ { . “On the subject of temperance it did not require a total abstinence pledge ‘1o be taken by either officers or members of this church. The res olution simply stated that it was ‘the sense of the assembly’ that some such action should be taken by the indi- vidual. It was in no way mandatory but only and entirely advisory.
