20, HOME BUILDING - IDEAS INPROVED Bettered Public Taste As- signed as One Reason for Higher Cost. A bettered public taste is one of the chief items responsible for higher cost of home-building today than home-bullding ten years ago, accord- ing to data coming to the National Assoclation of Real Estate Boards from architects and builders. While wage increases and increases in cost of building materials have, of course, Lrought about an actual increase in tuilding costs, the increase for fdentical types of construction, the data would suggest, is probably not 50 great as the public is inclined to feel. For a type of construction identi- cal with what it called for ten years ago is not what the modern home-building public is asking for. What Contractors Say. Here are some of the things that the contractors say: Ninety-five per cent of bungalow bathrooms being built in the typical Amerlcan city today have tiled floors and recessed bath tubs, as compared with the pine floors and ordinary fix- tures of 1 While price of laundry fixtures for the aversge home has gone up from $300 to about $600, the general group of people, who teén years ago used the hand-lighted water heater, today demand an automatic Instantaneous heater that adds a minimum of $200 to the total building cost. A g00d rule to follow In choosing furnishings is to avold anything that strikes you as elaborate or prominent, says the Plan Book for Better Homes in America. If a piece of wall paper, furniture, carpet or curtain material stands out in a shop you may be quite certain that it will stand out more and be more noticeable in a| house. A house can be considered properly turnished only when it meets the real needs of the occupants. Comfortable chairs, sofas and beds, good tables and soft carpets and rugs are the most important objects, and these should be the best that the family can afford. No definite rule can be applied to the arrangement of the furniture, but balance and wall space | should be considered first. Where a | single opening is placed in the center of the wall, or like opening at equal distance, the wall space will be in batanc in case of unequal openings the wall space will be out of balance. Grouping of Furniture. At balanced wall spaces place | pieces of furniture of relative size and contour. These may be tables, i chairs, sofas and pictures.
