Father Hannan, Found- er of Institution, Popular Throughout City. The Rev. Eugene A. The news of Father Hannan's resig- nation was received with surprise and regret throughout the city, and during the day the telephone service at the rectory was continuously busy answer- ing inquiries and receiving expressions of regret from the pastor's friends. Born In Capital. her Hannan is a Washingtonidn by birth and has lived here ill his life, with the exception of his years of study at the theological seminary and a4 few years when he was stationed in Baltimore under Cardinal Gibbons. .Hev_v«'nn the favorable attention of Cardinal Gibbons as a young priest assisting at St. N tin’s Church in Baltimore. On the steps of the house, was found a second note written on paper with a pencil, announcing: “We will be_back at 11:30. The climax of the affair, however, came this morning, when Mrs. C. C. McDevitt, sister of Mr. Johrden, re- siding on the lower floor of the house, found that the new screens which had been placed in the win- dows had been cut and slashed to demolition. When she discovered thig she telephoned the fifth precinct station and a police investigation of the case was set on foot. Those concerned in the investiga- tion are of the opinion that the work was not performed by an organiza. tion. Tt is thought by them to have been the criminal prank of a group of practical jokers. Discovery in the midst of the disclosusbs last night of a number of round sticke coverel with paper, twisted at the end, and taken at first to be dynamite, served only to strengthen the belief that | j practical jokers had been at work.
