By a Staff Correspondent, NAVAL OPERATING BASE, NOR- FOLK, Va.,—With officers and men of the United States Naval Reserve, res- ident in the District of Columbla aboard, the U. 8. 8. Eagle 56, arrived here yesterday morning at 8 o'clock. The trip down the Potomac river and Chesapeake Bay was made in short stages, completing the first leg of the first fifteen-day training cruise of the season. The vessel is in command of Lieut. Commander Willlam R. Hoefer, who has succeeded in making the vessel what man o' warsmen call a “home” when making reference to a happy ship. At the same time he maintains the strict discipline of the Navy, and each officer and man has “shaken down” in his billet well. There are a number of recruits aboard, who are gettig their first taste of naval life, but with them to make them at home are officers and enlisted men who saw service with the various United States fleets during the war. Supplies Taken Aboard. Monday the ship was under way at 7 o'clock to proceed to the naval oper- ating base, where oil, fresh water and supplies for the next leg were taken aboard. At Tangier Sound there will be target practice with small guns superimposed on the big guns. This trains the men in eighting and fiving, and In teamwork in handling the guns, of which the vessel has three, one of them anti- aircrart. Three days will be spent at Tangier Sound, after which the vessel will pro- ceed to Yorktown and afford liberty for the crew. Three days will be spent there, and during that time a party will g0 from Yorktown to Newport News, overland,' in charge of Chief Quarter. master Johnston, to visit the Leviathan, on which Johnston served during the war.
