GARY, IND., OFFICIALS , DENY “SHAKEDOWN” Continue to Attack Government Charges in Alleged “Liquor | Conspiracy.” BY the Associated Press. INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. March 27— Further attacks on government tes- timony regarding the existence of an alleged graft ring composed of Gary | officials, who, witnesses declared, preved on bootleggers, were sched- uled for today in the Lake county liquor conspiracy trial in federal court here. Charges that Gary officials caused the arrest of prohibition viola- tors, confiscated their liquor, then re- sold it and divided the proceeds among themselves, were branded as false by defense witnesses testifying at last night's court session. Other government testimony regardng the alleged “shakedown” system employ- ed in obtaining money from the boot- leggers for letting them off without prison sentences, also was denied by the defendants. City court records of the liquor cases in question, were in- troduced as evidence by the defense to bear out the defendant's testimony. Many character witnesses were called by the defense yesterday and testified regarding the integrity and high standing of the defendants.
