DOWD DIES AT HIS HOME HERE; Had Served as Clerk in War De- partment for Last Twenty- " Eight Years. CAPT. JOHN B. DOWD, Capt. John B. Dowd, civil war vet- eran and clerk for many years in the War Department, died Saturday night at the home of a daughter, Mrs. E. E. Switzer, 314 Upshur street. He was| eighty years old. _Capt.'Dowd at the outbreak of the civil war enlisted in the 85th Indiana Velunteers Regiment, and by rapid promotion reached the grade of the highest non-commissioned _ officer, that of sergeant-major. At this time he was commissioned captain and was placed in command of Company 21, 1 Regiment, United States = colored troops. He served in this capacity until May, 1865. After the war, Capt Dowd was ap- | pointed to a position in the War De- partment and served there as clerk for twenty-eight years. He was/| prominently identified in the G. A. R. and other Veteran organizations. He was the last man carried out alive in the Ford's Theater disaster in June 9, 1893. He was a member of the Loyal Legion, George H. Thomas, Post, No. 11, and’ the Old Guard. Of} late years Capt. Dowd had divided his time between the home of his daughter_in Washington and that of his_son, Earl M. Dowd, in Indiana.
