Wall street showed clearly enough today that it had begun to heed the warning held out on account of the Violent and altogether excessive spec- ulation in parts of the industrial llst during the previous fortnight. En- thusfasm has cbbed. This Was appar- ent in the irregularity of the price Inovement, but more especially In the falling off in the business volume. Compared with recent —standards, trading at times was really quiet. 1t would be superfluous to remark that this quieting down on the stock exchange was the most desirable Thing that could have happened for the good of the market's future. At ihe pace it was going a week ago the speculative campaign was fn- \fting a check, which, If not applied in time would have brought some un- Dleasant consequences. As it is now the market has settled down to & ecalmer appraisement of individual values Lased upon the facts of con- ditions within the respective in- dustries. Calmer Trading Desired. In cases where the rise has been overdone there will be chance for correction without creating disturb- ance in the general list, While in the greater part of the stock market there was little ten- dency one way or the other, the im- portant moves in particular stocks were nearly all of them upward. Although there was no actual ange in money rates there were signs of increasing activity in the market for time loans, with a more intensive demand and more willing- ness on the part of horrowers to meet tlie terms offered by lenders. This was significant, as it showed the ef- fect upon the money market of the constantly expanding demand for credit in commercial channels and the heavy enlargement in the Wall srreet loan account. The foreign ex- changes were all lower, but the de- cline was too slight to be of any con- sequence. Both French and Belgian government issues were rather notice- ably lower. i New Tariff Not Disturbing. The belated figures on December imports were publizhed today. Again, as in the two previous months, there was nothing to show any disturbing effect from the new tariff dutles.
