Lyons, chalr- man of the republican state commit- tee, and Gov. McCray. One of the elements of republican success in this) state in the last few years has been the close co-operation between the state's executive and the political or- ganization which sponsored his can- didacy, and for that reason the breach’ has caused no little alarm. The trouble between Governor Mec- Cray and Mr. Lyons developed largely because the milltant democratic min- ority In the Indiana legislature clam- ored so loudly for reduced state ex- { penditures that it placed the repub- ilicans on the defensive. Challenge Accepted. Governor McCray took a determ- {med stand for a $2,000,000 appropria- {tion for a new reformatory—a large {sum in the eyes of the Hoosier tax- payers—and the democrats accepted ! the challenge and advocated an ap- | propriation of $750,000_and the abro- gation of cost plus contracts under which the institution {s being built. With the clamor arlsing about ex- | travagant appropriations the repub- {lican state committee became alarmed {and assisted an ‘insurgent movement {in the house of representatives to cut |the figure to $1,500,000. Horse and Wagon Vanish With Contents in Boston Mystery. BOSTON, Mass, February 26.—The driver of a coal wagon left his equip- age for five minutes in a heat- less section of South Boston. The outfit consisted of a horse, a wogan and a ton of chestnut coal. All three had disappedred when the driver re- turned, and they were still missing tonight. The company offered a reward for the return of the horse and wagon. Nothing was said about the coal. MONSIGNOR OFF TO ROME. NEW YORK, February 26—Mgr.
