GLACK RN FROBE NAYENDI.C A :urder of Dominic Cuzzocoli May Find Solution in West Virginia. § { iHE ONCE LIVED THERE i Jnspector Grant Starts Investiga- §' tion Here to Clear Up § Mystery. i ¥ lu the case of Dominic Cuzzocoli, Killed in December. 1919, off Bennlng oad, at the foot of Boone's hill, just nis side of the District line, Wash- Eton, has a murder that may dove- il into the series of “blackhand” urders uncovered as a result of an Investigation in West Virginia. Inspector of Detectives Grant is now working toward this end, it was learned today, and is digging up all data, with the assistance of Detec- tives Morgan and Thompson, who handled the investigation at the time, which may aid in bringing points in the West Virginia blackhand investi- sation tn light. Murdered by Stabbing. Police records in December 1918, show that a young Itallan was mur- dered here by stabbing. The body was found evidently some time after death had taken place. The throat was cut and there were soventeen stab wounds in the body. Detectives Morgan and Thompson picked up a stilletto near the body. Over the face of the mur- dered man had been spread the in- signia of secret Italian society mur- ders—a handkerchief to shield the features from the elements. The face in so-called “blackhand” cases is in- variably covered, according to ex- verts. It took some time to find the trail. The face was so badly wounded, and had been so long exposed to the post- mortem decomposition, that identifi- cation by features was impossible. A tailor's label on the coat covering the body was found soaked with snow ‘water 50 ink b the word ark, N. J., out. Morgan went to Newark. By aid of the label the identification wa: established. Relatives of the deceased were found. ldentity Is Established. - This uncovered & line of clues which finally established the fact that Cuz- zocoll, who was about twenty-three ears old, had been trailed to Wash- ngton from Fairmont, W. Va.. and murdered here. It was estabiished that he had left that town with the common-law wife of Joseph Alte- monte—his uncle—after the latter had been robbed of 3500. The couple went to Bowden. a little town of North Carolina. Men from Fairmont located them there and induced Cuzzocoll to come to Washington. Arriving here he was murdered. Police arrested a local man and Altemonte, uncle of the murdered man. They then sought the woman. She had disappeared, and because of the lack of the essential evidence she could give, both the men were re- leasd. The case of Belle Lemons some months ago in Baltimore brought back echoes of the case, with the Intima- tion that probably the same secret organizations had something to do with that murder. e s ROTARIAN ROBBINS HOST. Organization Members and Fam- ilies Entertained at Theater. As guests of Rotarlan Roland S. Robbins, the entire membership of the Washington Rotary Club with their families occupied a reserved section at Keith's Theater last night to welcome Miss Julla Arthur, the noted Shakespearean actress, who is presenting this week the queen's closest scene from “Hamlet” E. F. Albee’s contribution to the revival of the immortal bard’s works that is sweeping the country. The applause following Miss Ar- thur's wonderful interpretation of what is considered the most impor- tant scene in the story of the mel. ancholy Dane called for a speech, and she explained to the Rotarians and others present the purpose of those fostering the Shakesperean move- | ment. She said that, while it was al most impossible to do justice to any scene from the poet's plays in the| limited fifteen minutes allotted to vaudeville acts. it had been decided | that the vehicle used last night was | the most suitable. The actress was showered with flowers from her Rotarian admirers, | and. following the performance, Miss Arthur, with her company, received the guests in the lounge of the the- ater, where Myer Goldman's orches- ! tra presented a special musical pro- gram, and refreshments were served. | Dancing followed.
