The Garfleld Citizens’ Association at its regular meeting last night au- thorized s committee to confer with the District Commissioners on the water supply In Garfleld Helghts. This action came at the end of a dlscussion of the eubject, which occu- led the greater part of the meeting. 'he committee had reported that the health department had condemned all private wells in that_section, and added that when the Commissioners were requested to extend the water main from the Garfield School to éup- ply the heights, they replied that the number of residents did not justify the expenditure. The result is, the committes stated that the people are required to sc cure their drinking and cooking water from the hydrant approximately a mile from their homes. Although the health department pronounced the water In a public well as potable, the committee stated, “it has been unfit for human consumption for approxi- mately five years, and not even stock will drink it.” A resolution was adopted expressing opposition of the association to the proposal to erect a monument to the ‘mammies” of the south. The resolu- tion said the plan has “no sincerety of purpose; it is intended to represent & spirit that does not really exist and for that reason will perpetrate 4 gross deception upon the public. he promoters of the proposal, the resolution continued, “should bow their heads in shame for suggesting this weak and tardy subterfuge by using a type that in giving its very Iife has been subjected jn return to indignities and sacrifices the like of which is, unknown to any other civilized country, and for which no structure created by man can ever compensaty e President Frank Coron presided.
