Dr. Hardesty, who was eighty-seven years of age, was born in Harrison- burg, Va. He graduated from the University of Virginia in 1854 and from the Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, in 1856. uring the civil war he took part in the first battle of Bull Run. Later he was sent to England as a pur- chasing officer of medical supplies for Lee's army. Both going and return- ing from England, Dr. Hardesty ran the blockade established by _the Union ships around the port of Wil- mington, N. C.
