AMUSEMENTS 2"ATIONAL—“Sherlock Holmes.” he curtain rose at the National iter last night on "that peer of mystery dramas of the stage, erlock Holmes,” .with the in- ble William Gillette in the role ihe famoms Sir Arthur Conan ! ;1o character. Lovers of this Illing type of stage production, keen “students of criminology, omed its return as Washing- welcomes the first breath of ng. Mr. Gillette, too, was ac-| ed that reception which theater- give unstintingly to their fa- s of the legitimate stage. is needless to recall, perhaps, + “Sherlock Holmes' has been a umphant Success ever since its t presentation in the Garrick cater in New York back in 1899, I undoubtedly will be as long as Gillelte appears in it as the in- cible solver of seemingly uncaop- crable mysteries. With a cast of ateurs, Mr. Gillette probably could sent the drama without any loss its strong appeal. It is too late, J utterly useless, however. to lav- 4 now any praise on Mr. Gillette's .lity as the Impersonator of the catest detective of fiction. But he s assembled to support him as lines of tlie program, which state that it is a “musical absurdity, built for laughing purposes auly.” The music is of a kind that appeals to the ordinary burlesque patromw. rang- ing from the jazziest jazz, as sung by Marie Lauritz, to classical selections by Inez Smith and Johnny Crosby The comedy is furnished by Danny Murphy, a_clever entertalner who, despite his Celtic name, is well versed in the Teuton dialect; Joe Yule, an odd _type of comedian, whose work as “Stuttering Sam” was very laugh- able, and Don Clark, who, in addi- tion to his many duties as “straight,” undertakes to stage the entire pro- duction. The comedy on the whole is rather enjoyable, there being only one feature that is in any way off color— the baby carrlage turn—and that could easily be dispensed with. Mabel Clark puts a good bit of ginger and ability into the role of soubrette nd wears a number of rather pretty costumes, two of which are daring, to say the least. Inez Smith has a pleasing voice, which she uses to advantage, and Exie ‘Butler, In addition to vocal selec- tions, plays a saxophone well. Marie Lauritz has only one song, which ap- pears to be an oversight, for she made MIMIC WARFARE - TO TEST POWER OF PANAMA CANAL By the Associated Press. s r SAN DIEGO, Calif., January 30.— Tests.of the Army's plans to pro- tect the Panama canal will be - made in the week beginning. Feb- ruary 18, when battleships, de- stroyers and bombing planes of the Aslantic and Pacific fleets will stage a realistic attack on the fortifications at Balboa. But th strangest part of the entire drama is its climax—a love cene in wh i Holmes and i porte Nora Swinburne, “‘:DHI‘J:) 8¢ Alice Faulkner, are 1o participants. Throughout the play thore is not one semblance of love . iaking of any variety, and when the linal curtain came down with an em- Lirace between Mr. Gillette and M\ssv Swinburne there was good reason for (he audience to be taken by surprise. Underground tunnels, secfet dun- zcons and all the requisites of stage Crime are obstacles in the path of Sherlock Holmes incessantly, and| the manner in which he escapes and circumvents a score or more of evil- doers is of more than passing interest.
