LIVERPQOL, December 6.— Thousands of American land birds, blown out to sea by unfavorable winds, sought safety on the decks o the Cunard liner Scythia on her last trip from New York and stay- ed on board until she docked in Liverpool. CHICAGO, December 6.—Still hold- ing the northwest in a chilling grip of subzero temperatures, winter con- tinued its belated advance today into the southland, causing marked drops in temperature as far south as Texas, +and calling forth predictions of colder Weather in the lake region, the great icentral valleys and the east gulf states. In the upper lake region the zero jand, subzero weather " was accom- panied by a sixty-mile wind driving before it a snowstorm that virtually tied up shipping. Reports . indicated that the cold wave still centered in North Dakota. Havre, Mont, and Williston, N. D. recorded the coldest temperatures the country last night, the mercury going past 6 below zero. Milder Temperature in East. The east did not suffer from the unusual cold prevalent in the north- west, temperatures there ranglng from 26 to 70 degrees above zero.
