In this comedy the President players have a distinct hit and they are making the most; of it. So are Washingtonians, who like plenty of wholesome fun. “Abie's Irish Rose” is brimful of laughs. snickers and even roars, presenting comedy broad enough to please every- body. yet subtle enough to merit the apprecfation of those who like finesse. It is a good story, that is as dra- matically French as Paris, with a sin- ister tang of plot that Poe would have indorsed. and yet so refreshingly original in tale and construction as to Zive only thrill-hints of a climax that comes with a crash. For beginning, there is a quaint lit- tle town thirty miles from Paris, but of such primitive remoteness from the ‘world’s excitements as to appeal to a novelist who has made his home there with his pretty but flirtatious young daughter. -While he writes the girl holds court in the old garden, and it is her captious treatment of her flance that inspires the writer to tell her the atory of his just finished book—"Black Orchids.” This story within a story has its environment in Paris, and has its ac- tion in the danger circle of an un- scrupulous and dangerously beautiful clairvoyant, Mme. Zareda, who lures her victims professionally as a reader of a crystal ball. There is a decrepit baron. who fools himeelf with the mirage that youth is merely a question of desire and make- up. and who, finding a rival in his young son, outwits what promises ro- mance by introducing the siren to a fabulously wealthy marquis, who is grieving for his dead wife. This mar- quis sees a resemblance between Zareda and his lost love, and she works the advantage to the point of marriage. The old baron gives a dinner at the Skin of Wine and. in his jealous rage at the marquis, places an overdose of khis own dangerous medicine in the goblet at his plate. Zareda uses her trained ape to change the goblet and ! the baron reaps as he has sown. The war comes and Paris laughs and sings under its heartbreaks. The boy goes to the trenches, and on his re- turn finds Zareda alone in the splendor of the grounds of the castle where the marquis has brought his bride. ‘There s a sequel that should not be spoiled for future audiences. One might call it a powerful story with- out going astray. There is added the acting of Lewis S. The feature picture play, “Shad- i ows,” is a_rather crudely conceived | story of a New Englangd coast village with the village preacher as the hero and the village banker as the hypo- crite, but the story revolves around the conversion to Christianily of a Chinaman, played by Lon Chaney, through observing the forgiveness of the hypocrite by the preacher, who has suffered unspeakable sorrow through the deceit of the villain. The play lacks in dramatic technique, and the ending is a pointless absurdity. Handled more skilifully the theme might be made impressive. There was nothing about the play that ap- proached the intense interest occa- sioned by “The Miracle Man,” which treated the same theme. Instead o{l is was tiresome. The Chinaman, as portrayed by Lon Cha. | ney, was pictured perhaps as well -ui a Caucaslan could play the part, but it was not convincing. In fact, it was | somewhat puzzling. i I A comedy delineating the ways of children and animals was amusing to the youngsters present. The Fox News pictures were interesting. But Creatore was the attraction. CRANDALL'S—“East Is West.” Censtance Talmadge and Nigel Barrie revel in eight reels of Inter- mingled comedy and melodrama in the early week feature, “East Is West,” at Crandall’s Theater, which had its opening presentation at that house last night. It offers a vehicle for pantomime which is taken decided advantage of by Miss Talmadge. as Ming Toy of Chinatown and San Francisco. Her work vies with that of Fay Bain- ter, who created the character on the stage, but it is distinctive to a mark- ed degree. Edward Burns, in the role of the rescuer of Ming Toy from slave dealers, and Warner Oland, as Charlle Yong, the half-breed China- man, both lend adequate support.
