HEFFERNAN. By Special Leased Wire to The Star. NEW YORK, September 30.—Trad- ing was comparatively qulet in to- day’s short session on the curb ex- change. Speculative enthusiasm in the high- priced Standard Oils was materially lessened because only routine busi- ness was taken up at Friday's meet- ing of directors of Standard Oil of New York, and because they had failed to act on m distribution of the company's surplus. No wide fluctua- tions occurred in these issues, as they had for the past week. Standard of Indiana was an active leader, turning weak toward the close, while the New York shares fluctuated irregularly eround the low of Friday. Magnolia “Petroleum lost the most ground of any. Anglo-American was an exception to the general tendency. A good demand for this stock resulted in a substantlal upturn. International Petroleum held firm. Action Ellewheu. Cities Service common and pre- ferred gained fractionally, but the bankers’ shares were neglected. Mu- tual Oil, among the independent oils, was active and higher on report that a Canadian interest had placed large buying orders in the market for this stock. Gulf Oll of Pennsylvania re- galned more than its loss of the pre- vious day in the first hour, but sub- sequently reacted on profit-taking. Simms and New England Fuel were steady, while Carib Syndicate and Seuthern States Oil lost ground. There was practically no feature to the trading in the miscellaneous section of list. Price changes in the mining section were udimportant with the low- priced issues the active leaders. — FOREIGN TRADER FAILS. ‘William J. Farrell Alleged Victim of War Unsettlement. NEW YORK, September 30.— Wil- liam J. Farrell, trader in general merchandise in this city, with con- nections in Barcelona, Spain, and other foreign cities, has filed a vol- untary Pe!l(lon in bankruptcy, listing his liabilities as $2,182,961 and his as- sets as $557.000. Farrell's financial difficulties were attributed by his attorney largely to shipments of merchandise to South America and Cuba during 1920, in- volving about $1,000,000, which he said the firm never received. Owing to unsettled trade conditions, it was explained, the goods exported never reached the firms to which they were consigned, but remained on the docks in foreign countries without claim- ants. As the merchandise had no value in this country, he said. it was useless to bring it back to the United States. GERMAN BONDS SOLD. Paper Discounted in U. S., English and Swiss Banks. PARIS, September 30.—The Belgian government announced that German bonds representing nearly 100,000.000 gold marks have been discounted in English, American and Swiss private banks, according to Le Temps' Brus- sels correspondent. The names of the banks were not mage public nor was the rate of discount: A membership in Chicago Board of Trade has been sold for $5,600, up $200 from last previous sale. LEGAL NOTICES. JAMES P. NEW YORK, September 30.—In spite of the threatening outlook in southeastern Europe, the bond mar- ket in the main was steadler today than it had been earlier in the week. Price changes were very irregular, but thers were quite as many, if not more, gains as there were losses. Liberty bonds continued to feel the force of selling by holders who an- ticipated thgt the new government !e likelthood of others to tion for the existing loan: The liberty fourth 4%4s, which at their high a month or so ago were 101.86, dropped below par. Foreign Issues Lower. Foreign government bonds showed to some extent the strain of the po- litical situation abroad. United King- [dom issu French governments and Belgian issues all went lower, but in no instance was there any impor- tant weakness. The selling was not especially heavy. 'rh- disposition of speculative ‘ral] ‘way bonds to harden was noticeable in view of their recent weakness. A number of the higher prled rail- way bonds moved up. an Pa- cific daunmn- d-ellnod ru.hr ssagzragy § spesapppuny Standard Ofl of Calllornll dcbmtnra 78 crossed 105.
