September 26 (Special).—While practically unani- mous agreement was reached by the Clarendon Citizens' Association at its |meeting last night that_school fa- cllities of the county are in great need of improvement and that noth- ing should Interfere with the suc- cess of the $354,000 bond issue ques- tion, almed to bring the neaessary re- let in Arlington district of which Clarendon is 2 part, which is to be submitted to the voters in a special election to be held October 9, there 3 |were a few members who were strongly of the opinion that the loca- Tion of the proposed high &chool should_be more definitely defined, be- fore the citizens are asked to cast thelr ballots. These members declared that if the question of the location of the high school was firmly fixed in the minds of the voters, eliminate criticism and’_dissatisfaction that might arise if the site is selected aft- X rates er the bonds have been authorized. 3 R i The fear expressed that the higl % ABSOLUTELY FIREPROOF school might be established at some 4 Ap % |out of the way place. v C. Fear Cost of Ground. u Taylor stated the principal reason g why the promoters of the building program have not gone into the ques- tion of sites is on account of the fear of a decided raise in the price of ground. If it became known, he said. that the school board had its eve on & certain tract of ground for its high school building, the owners of the property would undoubtedly raise the price of the land to such a height that it would take all the money to be raiged for the entire building project for the site alone, or they would hire high-priced lawyers to prevent con- demnation proceedings, in which case it would retard the building program for a number of years. The need of additional classrooms was strongly emphasized by the re- port of A. J. Webb, chalrman of the school committee of the association. which is as follows: “The Clarendon school opened for the present term on the 1Sth instant with an enrollment of about 400 pu- pils. This is a larger number than in former years and the superintendent of schools anticipates that this en- rollment will be swelled to 450 by the return of many families from vaca- tion, the addition of new families, etc. Grades Are Congested. “It has again been necessary to put several grades on half-day sessions, the first, second, third 2nd fourth. In the fourth grade alone there are seventy-six the warnings of flaws in sight not otherwise rec- ognizable. Cor rection on detection is the ETZ formula_for forefending future ills. Call upon pupils to be provided for. These facts strongly emphasize the necessity of much earnest thought and immediate definite action for more adequate school tacilities to take care of growing needs. Every family represented in this assoclation, ‘which has a child in the Clarendon school, is’ going to nat- urally feel that their child should hav proper schooling provided, but unie: something is done at the polls, withi the next two weeks someone's children are going to suffer for the mistake of their parents. “The bond isdue now proposed is the only logical method of rellef and if ¢hat fails now, our school system is ‘go- » % ing to the dogs,’ and the best people of o AN our commurnity will move out. If this g bond issue fails at the coming election, Offering the another election cannot be called for a Seven Essentials of year and this will mean two or three ~ Years more of increasing congestion.” a Banking House— Safety. Spirit, Experience, Calie President Tyler announced that the Completeness, question Taised by the members of the association regarding the site of the high school would be submitted for the consideration of the citizens' advisory board, which meets Thursday evening at the courthouse.
