SECRETARY -DAVIS’ BIOGRAPHY P-A-IN-T-E-R.S| BRINGS PRAISE OF LLOYD GEORGE Davis as recorded ‘n his sauto- bioggaphy, prompted David Lloyd George, prime minster of Great Britain, ‘the greatest Welshman of his day, to write a word of ap- preciation in an interesting short letter to Secretary Davis, as one Welshman to another, both of whom Lave won out admirably in the hard school of life, even though in dif- ferent parts of the glohe. “10 Downing St. “Whitehall, S, W. “September 7’ “Dear Mr. Davls: “While trying to snatch a short holiday, 1 have been reading your autoblography, which you so kindly sent me. I have found it most fasci- nating. The early chapters describ- ing your upbringing in Tredegar conjured up memories of my own childhood. What eepeclally attracts me is the drama of the struggle of one who, tutored In the jard school of the world and framingYthe alpha- bet of life from the letters of his own expetience, still keeps bright his faith in hiy fellowmen and still cherishes the ideals inspired b Welsh home. » %2 “I was also greatly attracted by the conception and fuffiliment of the Mooseheart dream, and If I go to America 1 should very much like |- to _be shown over the institution. “Cofion gereu atoch chwi a im holl-cydwladwyr yn-yr Amerig. “Sincerely yours, “(Signed). HOG ISLAND SHIPYARD DISMANTLING PUSHED Daily Auctions Held to Dispose of Huge War Plant by Piecemeal. ol 922, PHILADELPHIA, September 21.— Hog Island, where rose the shipbulld- ing industry during the war that gave the United States renewed prestige in the maritime world, soon will be the flat field it was before Uncle Sam invested $270.000,000 there. But the 946 acres will be habitable, as sani- tary engineers have made it so. Where once an army of 36,000 men were bullding high-class vessels at record-breaking speed there now is 12 detail of fifty men armed with oxy- acetylene torches and other instru- ments with which the demolition of the gigantic ways and other equip- |ment is belng wrought. The work of ‘dismantling the mammoth machinery of war is progressing at a rapid pace. The government's attempt to dis- pose of the plant by auction having brought only low bids. it was decided to sell it piecemeal. Ponderous as is muchv of the equipment, the govern- ment's investment at Hog Island rep- resents nearly everything that man requires. In the words of J. T. Eason, |mo government's agent in charge of the sale, “everything except airplanes, !p(anus and oil paintings.” Nearly {every day auction sales are held to dispose of things ranging from house- ]lhuld furniture to steel in 100,000-ton ‘lols, It is estimated that by the time {the sale closes. December 1, $25,000,- 1000 will have been realized on steel and equipment alone. One of the recent {large purchases made at the yard was |by a New Yorik steel brokerage house which bought 105,000 tons of steel. Twenty-five of the fifty huge ways, representing high ‘engineering skill, are already down, and the general ap- pearance of the yard today Is that of a tornado-swept place. It is expected [that some large manufacturing or storage plant will be erected on Hog Island " after the government has lcleared it off. _— BEQUEATHING CHILD LEGAL. GREENSBURG, Pa., September 21.— Seven years ago when Mrs, Lilllan Frederick lay dving of tuberculosis she wrote a will bequeathing her four-year-old daughter, Anna, to her aunt.” Yesterday Judge Charles Whit- lten upheld the will by declding against Anna's, father, who had brought suit to fecdver the child. - Seeing With the Mind’s Eye AN ADITORIAL INCOLN'S eyes ex- ternalized his deep understanding.
