® chairmanship_of Rt. 5 %, S THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. O, MONDAY, .SEPTEMBER 11, 1022 "EPISCOPAL REPORT ON MISSIONS TODAY Bishops and Delegates to Meet Together—Busy Week Ahead. ENVOYS FROM NEAR EAST Russian, Greek and Czechoslova- ¢ kian Churches Represented at Portland Convention. By the Assoclated Press. PORTLAND, Ore., September 11— The house of bishops and the house of delegates were to meet in jolnt « session today as the first important event in what promised to be a busy week In the Episcopal general con- vention. A hearing on the report of the department of missions was the principal feature to come before the joint session this morning. There was a heavy program of sectional meetings for the day. A score of matters of importance to the church are slated for action this week. Rishop Brent's resolu- tion on the divorce and remarriage question which caused a storm of comment Saturday was the principal subject of con ation. Some churchmen interpreted it as a part of the movement to make the divorce regulations of the church still more stringent. One of the most picturesque gath- erings in connection with the general convention will be the mass meeting tonight under the auspices of the commission to confer with the eastern orthodox churches and the old Catho- lice This commission, under the Rev. James H. Darlington, Bishop of Harrisburg during the last three years, has ex- tended its activities to Switzerland Greece, Serbia, Rumania, slovak stantinopl Land. p Darlington spent four .+ month ad visiting the heads of + natlonal churches, explaining the Episcopal Church to them and in- viting represe: ives to attend the Portland conven Representatives Patriarch of wnti e here from the h, who lives at Damascus; from the F arch of Jerusalem, from the F n Ortho- dox Church in the United States and from the Czechslovakian National Crurch. FRANCE IS FAVORITE INUPPER MARLBORD im L] Expected to Lead for Republican |m Nomination—Bruce Backed by Democratic Leaders. Special Dispatch to The Star. UPPER MARLBORO, Md., Septem- | ber 11.—This is the day of the pri- « mary election in the democratic and re- publican parties. The polls opened at 7 o'clock and will close tonight at 7. Most of the voting in the upper sec- tion of Prince Georges county will be done between 5 and 7 o'clotk, this sectfon being inhabited for the most * part by federal empl The most interesting fight perhaps is_in the democratic party, where William Cabell Bruce of Baltimore. David J. Lewis of Cumberland and William L Norris of Baltimore are staging a triangular fight for the senatorial nomination to succeed Senator Jo- eeph L France, republic So far as Prince Georges county is concerned, Bruce appears to have a distinct a vantage inasmuch as he has the o ganization back of him and appar- ently is the only candidate who has any funds working. There is some Bruce money in the county, while Lewis and Norris ap- pear to be without it. Senator Joseph I France and John W. Garrett are fighting it out for the republican senatorial nomination. With but few exceptions all of the leading republican_ politicians are backing France, and it seems certain that he will receive i over Garrett in Prince (¢ The congressional scrap is app: between Clarence M. Roberts of Land- over, Prince (Georges county, and ¥rancis E. Mattingly of Indian Head, Charles county. J. Dorsey Dunlap of Annapolis and Dr. John W. Klemm of Mount Rainier do not appear to figure. Sidney E. Mudd, who now represents this congressfonal djstrict, has no op- position for renomination. . BRAZIL IS GRATEFUL. Ambassador de Alencar Personally Expresses Nation’s Thanks.
