PRISONERS STRIKE AGAINST ROUTINE i\ l. W. W. Refuse to Work. Confined to Dungeon on Bread and Water. §|synpicaLism CHARGED Eight Men, Convicted Under State Law, Claim They Are Po- litical Prisoners. Special Dispateh to The Star, SAN FRANCISCO, Calif,, August 3. —A strike has broken out in San Quentin Prison. The participants are ight leading members of the L W. W. Serving terms under the state crim- inal syndicalism' law, they have re- fused to work in the jute mill. Their _| protest s that, as they are political - | prisoners, they cannot be forced to £ [come into competition with free labor. The eight were asked today whether hey wero willing to return to work fter having been locked in the prison ungeon since yesterday. long as I have strength enough se I will maintain my posi- s the reply of the leader, aveel. His followers nodd ssent. They were then sep- rated and placed in solitary confine- ment while the warden ordered that, until they announce their willingness 0 g0 o work, they are to be kept on 1 bread-and-water diet. The prison officials say that they xpect the strike will be broken as oon as the new course of treatment as did its effect. Others have tried he same stunt, they declare, but never succeastully. However, convicts in whom the men confided before they announced their position declare that they were de- termined to hold out. According to them Gaveel said: “We are not ordinary prisoners. We were convicted under a law written into the state statutes as an emer- gency war measure and which now s being used for oppression in times of peace. The government is strong enough to seize and imprison us, but it cannot bring us into competition with free labor. We will not work no matter how long they keep us in the dungeon. “The eight of us are not criminals. e were arrested and convicted for expressing our opinions. These opinions may be wrong, but we do not think so. We have never de- fact that here In California a man cannot express his opinions without being arrested and compelled to work."” Warden James Johnstone stated to- day that he has only the one way to enforce disofpline, confinement in the dungeon. This is a brick bullding above the ground, but practically dark. The interiors of the cells are very gloomy. Unlesa the doctors so order, the bread-and-water diet s not varled. When it is, it is by the addition of vegetables. “I cannot review the cases of any men gent here.” sald the warden to- “The courts pase on these cases. work i3 to make rules for the guidance of the inmates and then en- force such rules. That i{s what I am doing in this case.” Gaveel's fellow strikers are John ,_Harold Walton, Michael J. . Patrick Casey, Jack Martin, . They claim American birth and citizenship. A number of men convicted with them are under bond pending appeal of their cases.
