Falls 150 Feet With Machine in Dive Just Across River Lewls 8wan, twenty-three years old, of 1718 Kenyon street, was instantly killed when an airplane in which he was riding crashed to earth on the Virginia side of the Potomac river near the government ezperimental farm about 5 o'clock yesterday after- noon. Herbert Fahy, twenty-two years old, of 829 22d street, who accom- panied Swan, miractiously escaped Geath, but was seriousiy injured about the body. Both men were rushed to Emergency Hospital, where examination found fl‘nfit s Swan’s skull had been fractured, face badly cut, his chest crushed and s right leg broken in two places. Acecident During Test. The plane had been in the air less than six minutes when the accldent occurred, Fahy was acting as pllot, and after encircling the field twice at- tempted to bank for a third -turn when the machiné€ shifted into a nose dive at about 150 feet in the air. Fahy, who, with Paul Kelschner of Rockville, Md., owned the machine, an old 50-horsepower Curtis, had just fintshed overhauling it, and it was on a test flight when the crash came. After working all day with the two men, and Elbert W. Brown, of 337 11th street northeas Swan asked to Le allowed to accompany Fahy on the test trip, but the owner of the ma- chine had already Invited Deputy Sheriff O. W. Welch of Arlington county, who was on the grounds, to make the initial flight. The officer was about to jump into the seat when he said he “saw some- thing” that didn’t look altogether right about the machine although he wasn't able to tell definitely what it the matter with you, are you yellow?' shouted Fahy as he noticed Welch hesitate. “No" answered the sheriff, “but it don’t look good to me.” Just then young Swan brushed Welch aside and seated himself in the plane that took him to his death. July 26—Taken to the dark cellar in which his victim had been found, and confronted Wilhl Thomas Scott, fifty-two, negro, yesterday confessed the murder of William Shires, twenty-five years old, Win- chester, Ind.
