PASTOR T0 MAKE STUDY IN ARMEN| Dr. Tupper Granted Leave for Trip in Interest of U. S. Immigration. Dr. Henry Allen Tupper, pastor of the First Baptist Church, will make a tour of Armenia, Turkey and neigh- | boring countries during the late sum- mer and early fall to study the Ar- menian problem in connection with American problems of immigration. At the guggestion of Secretary of Labor Davis and the commissioner xeneral of immigration, the congre- zation has granted leave to the pas- tor to engage in the work. Dr. Tup- per said yesterday, however, he would not be any way officlally con- “in nected with the government.” Action was taken by the church at a quarterly business meeting on ‘Thursday evening, when the letter from Secretarly Davis was presented to the congregation by Newton Wan- ger, chairman of the board of dea- cons, as follows: Request for Services. “The commissioner general of im- migration, with my hearty approval, has addressed your pastor, Dr. Henry Allen Tupper, In which he says: “‘I want to ask whether it would be feasible for you to make some in- vestigation of the situation in Turkey during the present summer. It is be- Jieved that if a careful inquiry could ‘e made by one, who, like vourself, is well acquainted with the country and the problem of the Armenian, con- riderable good might result. Of course, we have to enforce the immigration law, but it is the desire of all con- cerned that the dictates of humanity be observed so far as possible, and if one of your great experience with these people in their country of origin can suggest some means by hich this can be accomplished in the eatest possible degree, I am sure ur contribution to the cause would be a valuable one.’ “I presume, in Indorsing these words of the commissioner general, 1o express the hope that the First Baptist Church will find it possible 10 spare Dr. Tupper at least two months from his great work at the church, and enable him to make this noble contribution to a great work, for which he is pre-eminently quali- ed.” Granted Unanimously. By a rising and unanimous vote the request of the Secretary of Labor was acceded to, with an expression of ap- preciation on the part of the church. “It must be distinctly and clearly understood,” said Dr. Tupper, “if T accept this Invitation I will not be in any way officially connected with the government, will not be its agent and will not have any authority from it or financial aid, but, of course, its sympathetic moral _influence n will greatly e and impor- appreciate the is made to E i a and other lands ‘in that part the world at this time of unrest and chaos let us hope that substantial results may re- ult and that my report may bring a 1 ecially to the unfortunate tant work. I s honor, Dr. Tupper has personal knowledge £ the peoples of st,_and Its Pres- has had Dr. Tupper may -xt Week, to be absent until October. WILL CONTINUE HEALING.
