The tube will not pass more than fifty milliumperes for any length of time without over- heating, but two or more may be connected in parallel to pass the de- sired amount of current. The ‘tubes will rectify alternating current rang- ing from 300 1o 750 volts. If higher voltages are to be rectified the proper number of tubes may be connected in series. Overloading of the tubes will cause excessive heating and the recti- fying properties will be lost to a greater or lesser extent. The life of the tube has not been determined a8 yet, but depends upon the ability it has to stand the effects of heating and cooling. The manufacturers con- servatively rate it at 3,000 hours. While these tubes may be used for storage battery charging on alternat- ing current circuits, probably their best value is in rectifying aiternat- ing current for use with vacuum tube transmitters. The advantage of a rectifier tube without a filament may be at once recognized. At least, the tube cannot burn out through failure of the filament. The tube illustrated does not depend upon the electron potential (positive or negative) found which gives a certain plate current. Or, if a point is located on the line AC for u certain grid potential, tric- { Ing this point upward along a vertical line to Its intersection with the characteristic curve, and then over to the line AB, along a line parallel with AC, the corresponding value of plate current will be found. The characteristic curve and its reference lines give a picture of the change of plate current with changes of grid potent! for any given tube when plate potential and fillament current (which controls temperature) remains the same. It is to be noted that no two tubes will very likely have the same characteristics under the same conditlons of plal potential and filament current. Also, that if either filament current or plate potential are changed a new characteristic result when one particular 7 | tub dered.
