By the Associated Pres 9.—The hatred of Europe’s moderate socialists for the | Russian communists and the latter's reciprocal feeling crystallized yes- terday at the opening of the trial here of thirty-four members of the social revolutionist party. Leaders of the Second Interna- tionale and other ropean socialist organizations appeared as counsel for the defendants, who aze accused, with other things, of betraying the Rus- slan revolution, of assisting Kolchak and Denikine ‘and of engineering plots to assassinate Lenin, Trotsky and other bolshevik leaders. The defendants ure divided Into three groups, the first being headed by Aneram K. Gotz, responsible mem- ber of the central executive commit- tee of the social revolutionist party who was one of the principal aides to Kerensky, and Dimitri Donskoi, accused as tle party's represe on all military committees a being in touch wita Gen. Lu. In this group is a wom M. Ratner, cashier of the party. Reds Defend Second Group. The second group consists of six Or seven persons, including L Konoplova and M. Semenoff-Vasil who were, it i alleged, actua charged with the task of killing the bolshevik leaders, but who turned informers. These are being defended by _eminent bolshevists as counsel The third group comprises a num- ber of the members of parties al- leged to have been familfar with the plotting, to have sheitered the plot- ters or to have been otherwise im- plicated. At the opening of the trial the de- fendants raised the objection that as all three of the judges were com- munists, it was improper for them to sit in judgment upon their po- litical cpponents. The objection was overruled, after a forensic battle, in which internationally famous social- ists took part Some of the prisoners also entered the fray, hurling objections and in- terjections in Russian, French and German. The defense also objected to the designation of M. Krylenko as chief prosecutor on the ground that he was prejudiced, being head of the supreme revolutionary tribunal, and alxo because his wife assisted in 1 investigation of the case. Belgian Socialist Counsel. Emil Vandervelde, Belgian = cialist, once member of the Belgi; cabinet, and president of the Second Internationale, is one of the leading figures in the counsel for the defen: and was foremost in pressing the ob- {dections to the judges and prosecutor. He declared it was ivideni that Bel- glum and Russia had different cou- ceptions of justice.
