By WALTER J. ROBB. By Cable to The Star and Chicago Daily News. 922, with Continental Coprright, _MANILA, May 31.—The theme of Gov. Gen. Wood's Memorial day ad- dress ‘was the inscription an Ameri- can officer wrote on the grave of his son, killed in battle: “He lived right, fought right and died right.” Gen. Wood eaid that the world was not at peace but that war was on every land, and that until God remade man’s nature war would never cease. “We must get back to the princi- ples of the Constitution,” he sald, “back to faith in things—faith in the country, faith in the church, faith in ourselves. Not looking for war but readiness to serve in peace and war must be our national spirit. This spirit of service must be impressed upon the young and upon newcomers 80 that the sacrifice of these honored dead will not have been in vain.” A bugler of the 31st Infantry blew taps over the graves of the Philippine and Spanish war veterans bivouacked under the spreading acacia trees. An adjacent plot contains an American grave dating 100 years back. Fili- pino and American veterans paraded jointly after holding separate ser- vices under the Stars and Stripes.
