Hal Blaisdell had confiscated their vanity boxes early in the afternoon, and restored them only with Merriam's express com- mand. For it was the first time that these three highly decorative damsels had picnicked with the Blaisdells, and they had found it to be a much more strenuous affair than they had antici- pated. 9 For to the Blaisdells a picnic was not a picnic unless it included two or three hours of vigorous walking. The sight of the steak on the words startled me. What must they have done to her? But yda never lost your real, subconsclous love for another.” He stopped, then added in a low tone that was almost inaudible, yet which did not call for an answei “Could you—be honest with yourself, for you nee¢ say not a word aloud— could you always be sure of yourself in_the face of any situation?’ She looked startled. Her ordinarily inscrutable face betrayed everything, though it was averted from the rest of us and could be seen only by Ken- nedy. She knew the truth that she strove to repress; she was afraid of herself. It is dangerous,” she murmured, ‘to be with a person who pays at- tention to such little things. If every one were like you I would no longer breathe a syllable of my dreams. She was sobbing now. What was back of it all? I had heard of the so-called resolution dreams. 1 had heard of dreams that kill, of unconscious murder, of the ter- rible acts of the subconscious somnam- bulist of which the actor has no recol- lection in the waking state until put under hypnotism. Was it that which Kennedy was driving at d‘”h'l“fi Dr. Ross moved nearer to Mrs. Mait- land as if to reassure her. Craig was studying attentively the effect of his revelation both on her and on the other faces before him. Mrs. Maitland. her shoulders bent with the outpouring of the long- suppressed emotion of the evening and of the tragic day, called for sym- pathy, which I could see, Cralg would readily give when he had reached the climax he had planned. “Kennedy,’ exclaimed Masterson, pushing aside Dr. Ross, as he bounded to the side of Mrs. Maitland, unable to restrain himself longer, “Kennedy, you are a faker—nothing but a damned dream doctor—in sclentific replied Craig, with a quiet curl of the lip. “But the threads of the typewriter ribbon, the align- ment of the letters, the paper, all the ‘finger-prints’ of that typewritten note of suicide were those of the ma- chine belonging to the man who caused the soul-wound, who knew Madeline Maitland’s inmost heart bet- ter than herself—because he had heard of Freud undoubtedly when he was in Vienna—who knew that he held her real love still, who posed as a patient of Dr. Ross to learn her secrets as well as to secure the subtle poison of the cobra. That man, per- haps, merely brushed against Price Maitland In the crowd, enough to scratch his hand with the needle, shove the false note into his pocket— anything to win the woman who he knew loved him and whom he could win. Masterson, you are that man!" (The en Down! Van Slyke. bois unpacked his glasses for him, stealing a glance at Hal Blaisdell, who was obligingly holding a box cover for a tray. Gresham shrugged his shoulders, and elaborat8ly omitied | the singers as he passed his cock- tails. “Yumpy" Johnson began a noisy auction of the dividend. For the girls of the party were timidly sipping the first round and declining a second, as they anxiously eved their unceny cerned chaperon. “Yumpy” and Rich. ard pretended much glee over the cx- tra drinks, but there was a noticeable sigh of relief as the hickory plank stacked with thumb-bits moved to- ward the great stack of toast that Hal was dipping in melted butte; The whole crowd ate hungrily. They were uproariously, vouthfully happy. They played crude jokes upon each other and shouted like Indians. When the sun had dropped behind a mountain-like bank of clouds, Jerry threw juniper boughs Into the fire to smother the smudge of the refuse that the stapid Hawley girl had dumped therein. Wrapped in rugs and coats they all gathered around in the sand to sing until a wee spring moon slipped over the horizon. It was John Lindsay who arose first. “We ought to be starting back,” he decreed In spite of loud vetoes for his_suggestion. “John is a perfect parent.” Merriam laughed. “He Is afraid that Uncle Thorne and Nan haven't put those twinses to bed at the time they prom- ised they would. You'll get no peace until you start, so we might as well break camp. Half an hour later they were all scrambling up the bank to the spot where they had parked their cars. Merriam supposed that, of course, this time she and John would ride in the same car. Already she was lingering near him. "She was pleasantly tired and she wanted to snuggle against him and know that he knew she was silently asking to be forgiven for her silly part in the silent squabbling they had kept up all day. She knew that when his arm crept around her that would be his way of tacitly ask- ing to be forgiven for his obstinate part in_the tiff. But John elaborately avoided her. Again it was young Gresham who caught her arm and led her toward the smaller car. She hardly dared to make herself conspicuous by pulling away from him. But there was a reckless light in his bold eyes that she did not like. He had unmistakably had too many of his own drinks. ~She shivered a mechanism, and has a definite mean- ing in penetrating the mind. It is as though we had two streams of thought. one of which we allow to flow freely, the other of which we are constantly repressing, pushing back into the subconscious or unconscious. Then the re- pressed material comes to the surface, But the resistances never entirely lose their power. and the dream shows the material distorted. Seldom does one recognize his own repressed thoughts or unattained wishes.
