Lofty mountains, some rugged, somée smooth. Hundrqd-mile views from peaks that you can climb, or from mile-high trolley lines or' motor roads. Fertile valleys on one side—a desert like Sahnra on the other. Mountain lakes and trout streams, golfing, sea bathing, tennis, camping, hikes into wildernesses, missions, dancing or the theatre. All witfn a stone’s throw of the ninth city in size in the United States! ‘That is Southern California—the great vacation land that you have missed. Perhaps you think it warm there dur- ing summer. It is warm and balmy, but how warm? ' Temperature Cali- The average temperature in §duthern fornia for tha it “ years (U, I. ‘Weather Bureau records) is as foliows:” Jung, 66—July, 70—August, 71—September, 69. The seme records show that a grest city in the e-uudlhhu:dnnhnnfllh..mnonlym day in June, two days in July, three in August and three in_September when ' the thermometer touches or exceeds 90 degrees. The air is usually dry, so higher temperatures are comfortable here that would be uncomfortable ia tbt East where humidity emphasizes heat. Southern California averages 309 days of nmlhl.n. Summer is the reinless season 8o you can plan on perfect weather for your fun. An Invaluable Change Vacations are of value tb the extent that thcy provxde a change of scene, environ- ment and interest——so most physicians say. They say ‘also that whole families need this change. i I—an easterner—first went to South- ern California in the summer on the ad- ‘vice of & physician who had been there. I went first for my health. , But for * ‘each succeeding six summers I went to see sights and enjoy experiences and diver- -sions that I had never known until I found this wonderland of summer. I found there 4,000 miles of motor highways, paved like city streets, leading to a myriad places filled with that rare dm‘m of unfamiliarity and difference— 1y, people and oecupmam-—that al- wm msud by the phrase, “a trip abroad.” e In fact, I found each year | in Southern| California “a trip abroad in' my own United States.” ) And 30 can you, who wish to do so—/ and at a very reasonable cost. Go Now ‘The thing to do is go now, while you may. Go see these things that you have never seen. There’s real rest in the new- ness of a change like this. Let the entire family have this great trip this summer. It will be a h(olong source of pleasure to you. Special low-rate, round trip fares now in effect—No more War Tax. Ask any railroad ticket agent for further information, or mail cou- pon below. By Wircless to The Star aad O May 15.—The days of fat men will soon be ended If & discovery made by Dr. Philip Bocken heimer, the famous Berlin surgeon, leads to the results looked for. The doctor, who first acquired renown at the time of the war for his skill in operations, has reduced the size of the ankles of several well known European dancers. including Saharet, who origi- nally came from Australia. He has also reduced a_middle-aged man from 220 pounds to 170 by simply cutting out the fat. After an operation ‘a few stitches in the back of the leg near the heel or in the waist show where the fat has been removed to make an ankle more elender or to reduce a girth. Prof. Bockenheimer's discovery came to the ears of a Spanish woman, who invited him to go to Spain. He will operate there for two months on_both men and women. He was in the United States eleven vears ago, and has trav- eled extensively in Asia, on which coun- try he is an authority.
