THE EVENING CHERRYDALE FIRE FIGHTERS BANQUET Banner Event in History of Volunteer Departmént En- joyed by Hundreds. Members of Congress, state and county officials, firemen, regliars and volunteers, and 400 Arlington county citisens united last night to make the sixth snnual banquet’ of the Cherry- dale Volunteer Fire Department, incor- porated, the banner event in the his- tory of the organigation. The large auditorium of the new $25,000 Fire- men's Hall was crowded to capacity, and more than 100 were turned away through lack of room. ‘Willlam Greenwell presided as toast- master. Senator Claude SBwanson, the firat speaker, extolled the memory of & great Virginlan who achieved fame through unselfish service such as re- quired of volunteer firemen. Bright Future Predicted. Representative R. Walton Moore predicted great things in_the future for Arlington county, and particuarly Cherrydale. He told of the difficulty in selecting a name for the new Aque- duct bridge, and suggested either “George Mason” or “Cherrydale” as be- ing appropriate. State Senator Walter Tansil Oliver of Fairfax told of the accomplish- ments of the recent session of the leg- islature, adding that the general as- sembly having definitely fixed the route of Lee Highway over the new bridge through Cherrydale, “Lee Highway” would be a fitting name for the bridge. Addresses also were made by Judge Samuel G. Brent of the circuit court, Col. Wilbur C. Hall of Leesburg, floater delegate in_ the legislature from Loudoun and Fauquler counties, and Frank L. Ball, Arlington county's prosecuting attorney. C. C. Donaldson, chief of the fire department, sketched the develop- ment of the organization and re quirements for membership. The d partment responded to elghty- alarms during the past twelve months, according to Mr. Donaldson,. having one pald man on duty at all hours to answer alarms. Pictures were shown of the depart- ment in action Including rescue from the upper story of a modern build- ing. Supper was furnished by the ladles’ auxiliary, and entertainment was furnished by the firemen's min- strel troupe, the Montrose Quartet and Arthur B. White, a Washington monologuist. The quartet was obilged to respond to numerous encores. —_— HELD IN HANDBOOK CASE. Samuel Swann Accused of Part in ‘Waiters’ Club Affair.
