The new device, which has been de- yeloped by the Navy and announced by Secretary Denby, employs sound apparatus similar to that used during the war for detection of submarines. The principle of its use is that of creating a sound on the ship and lis- tening for the echo of this sound from the bottom of the ocean, meas- uring the time between the creation of the sound and the return of the echo. . Some surprising ocean depths around Porto Rico were discovered by officers of the dispatch boat Dolphin, who were making soundings in that vicinity, which confirmed the theory long held by hydrographers that the Atlantic ocean near Porto Rico and Bermuda is of the greatest known de- pressed area, except for some possibie spots in the Pacific. The Navy De- partment at that time received from the Dolphin a report that the record of 4,561 fathoms obtained by the Blake in 1882 had been surpassed by FIXED 1,000 DRUG PARTIES SAYS “SCAR-FACE TONY” Among Other Clients, Prisoner Claims Movie Star Mentioned in Taylor Murder Case. By the Assoclated Press. NEW YORK, March 20.—Admitting, according to the police, that he had arranged more than one thousand opium parties in this city, Anthony Gessel, thirty-nine years old, was ar- raigned in magistrate’s court and held in $1,500 bail for trial. Gessel was arrested early yesterday morning after he had sold, it was alleged, a “toi” of oplum to detectives of the narcotic squad for $5. Gessel also has admitted, according to Deputy Police Commissioner Dr. Carlton Simon, who said he regarded the arrest as important, that he had sold drugs to prominent persons at Hollywood, Calif. Dr. Simon said that Gessel, known in the underworid as “Scar-Face Tony,” claimed to have had as a regular customer for drugs a motion picture star whose name figured in the story of the murder of Willlam Desmond Taylor, movie director at Hollywood. He expressed the belief, Dr. Simon added, that Taylor was slain by a member of a L ngeles “dope” ring. “Gessel mon said, “because of his friendship with denizens of the white light district, was employed by large dealers to dispose of their drugs. His trade was with those on the lowest rungs of the theatrical ladder and with minor ‘sports.’” TOURISTS ARE MAROONED IN HAWAII BY HEAVY RAIN HONOLULU, T. H., March 19.—Semi{- torrential rains which have visited the Hawaiian Islands during the past week caused much damage and ma- rooned many tourists and sightseers. The raintall caused the collapse of one « he ancient landmarks here, a mud i house bound with straw that stood for more than a cen- tury in the grounds of the convent of the Sacred Heart. The dwelling was old when the first Catholic mission- aries landed here in 1837. A party of twenty-five tourists who were visiting the volcano Kilauea, on the Island of Hawaii, were marooned at the volcano house near the brink of the crater for several days because the heavy rains had washed out sev- eral bridges on the road from Hilo, the seapjort to the volcano. Extremely rough weather accom- panied the rain, inter-island vessel captains reporting the hardest voy- ages in years. in Gth A special fea- ture event that offers unending selection from hundreds of Silk, Taffeta, Spring- weight Crepes, Jerseys (includ- ing the popular 3-piece cape model) and other very attractive ¢ om binations. The Dolphin found bettom after 4,662 fathoms (over five miles) of wire had been run out, which made it the deepest spot ever Tound in the entire Atlantic ocean. As compared with depth ascertained in ,other pasts of the world these solindings indicate that the next deep- est places in the Atlantic are in the Caribbean sea, at points where the ocean's bottom has been touched at . 3.284 fathoms. ‘The deepest known spot in the south Atlantic ocean is a place of 4,030 fathoms, eleven miles south of the equator, off the Brazilian coast. The most depressed portion of the earth’s crust so far recorded, it is sald, is in the north Paclfic ocean and was discovered by Lieut. Commander H. M. Hodges, U. S. N., in the United States ship Nero, who measured a depth of 5,269 fathoms, over six miles. This depression is nearly equaled in | depth by an area lying a short dis- | tance east of the Kermadle Islands, in the south Pacific ocean, where the British ship Penquin ran out 5142/ fathoms of line in 1895. H It is thought that the new device which has been developed by the United States Navy for measuring ocean depths will prove of great val- ue to merchantmen as well as to navies and to science.
