FINANCIAL, POOLS AGAINBUSY " N STOCK MARKET Short Selling Brings Irregu- larity—Rails a Sustaining Feature. NEW YORK, February 8.—Shorts Pput out fresh lines at the opening of today’s stock market, but bull pools continued their activities in various @pecialties. 7 United States Food Products, which ‘was thrown into bankruptcy yester- day, recorded a further decline of 1% points t¢ 2%, a new low record. Coppers, tobaccos, low - priced motors and rails forfeited large frac- tions. Gulf States Steel and New York Airbrake made one point gains and Adams Express rose 2 points on rumors of aenother cash distribution, ‘Wells Fargo also rising 1% points. Exchange on London made & new high, with demand bills at 4.35%. Liquidation Is Steady. Steady liquidation of minor special- ties _emphasized the irregularity of the first hour. Food Products, United Drug, International Harvester, Su- matra co common and preferred and Famou: 1 1 2 points, and several of the cheaper motors and steels reacted sharply. Ralls were the only sustaining fea- tures of that period, St. Paul pre- ferred, Chicago Northwestern com- mon and preferred, Northern Pacific, Erie first preferred and New Or- leans, Texas and Mexico galning 1 to 2 points. 'he _market improved before noon, Corn Products rallying with Baldwin, while Gulf States Steel, Chandler and Studebaker were again taken in hand. The open rate for call loans held at 5 per cent, but private offerings ‘were made at 4% per cent. French Exchnge Division. To what extent the advance {in French exchange, which continued to- day, is merely an offshoot of the movement in sterling, and to what extent it is Indicative of i{mprove- ment in Franoce's financial condition is a question upon which opinion is very much divided. The response which improvement in French ex- change is having in the market for ¥French government bonds certainly suggests that it is not wholly a sym- pathetic rise, but implies some real degree of economic gain. The strength of the French external loans ehared interest with that in the United King- dom issues in today’s bond dealings. Rallway securities were the leaders on the stock exchange. The bonds were quite as prominent in the ad- vance as were the stocks. The move- ment started in the St. Paul issues, spread to the other low-priced mem- bers of the group and finally reached the standard dividend payers. Such representative stocks as Union Pa- cific, Northern Pacific, Great North- ern preferred and New York Central, all either equaled or surpassed their best prices of 1922. Extraordinary Strength. ‘The extraordinary strength in St Paul stocks, although the road earned only 40 per cent of its fixed charges last year, was another sign, of which there have been very many lately, that the market has its face set to- ward the futures, and is optimistic even with regard to properties which have not yet come out of their slump. ‘While operations flourish were go- ing energetically in the railway I there was considerable profit taking in the industrials. In the main this sort of selling was readily absorbed and there were numerous advances in individual stocks. Studebaker went through its previous high, Chandler notors was equally strong, the ‘was _the usual sharp upbidding in & number of the specialties, with a nar- row market. which easily lend them- selves to official stimulation. Exchange Chief Tople. Further remarkable advance in sterling exchange was the chief in- cident in to 's financial situation. At $4.36 rates were up 16 cents in the pound from a month ago. Half of this rise has been accomplished within the last ten days. There were no developments to throw any fresh light upon this movement. In the broader sense it is a measure of Furope’s economic recovery which Las become more definite and sure since the first of the new year. From more technical point of view it the result of a diminished foreign demand and lower price lev- els for American merchandise, with a corresponding curtailment in the support of exchange drafts. Normally this is the season in the foreign trade when American imports approach their maximum, while ship- ments of staples are at their mimi- mum. Thid condition exists now and the excess of exports has been 8o reduced that England is able to more than offset it with the so-called “invisible” credits. FOREIGN BONDS HIT NEW HIGH MARKS Feature Market Trading To- day—Follow Upward Ex- change Trend. BY STUART P. WEST. Bpecial Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, February 8.—Foreign government bonds were very strong again in today’s market, following closely the upward movement in the exchanges. United Kingdom 533s of 1922 and the 5%s of 1929 both estab- lished new tops. As both of these car- ried the conversion privilege into a refunding long-term issue, at the rate of $4.30 for sterling, they are vir- tually a call upon sterling at this fig- ure. With the rate at $4.36, as it was today, the price of 1922's which ma- ture next autumn, worked out to 103. French issues, both the 8s and 7%s, reached higher prices than they had at any time previously this year, and drew very close to their best of 1921. ‘Their advance is interesting in rebut- tal of some of the pessimism ex- pressed in banking circles over the financial outlook in France. Belgian 7%s, likewise moving with Belgian rates of exchange, got across 107. ‘While the Swedish kroner reached 26, or almost up to par, this was the one instance where the bonds did not respond. The Swedish 6s were, in fact, some lower on the day. Rails Take Lead. In the corporate list rallway se- curities took the lead, as they did in the movement of stocks. St. Paul's bonds, with the exception of the refunding 4%s, were all up a t or more, including the 4s of 1425, the convertible 4%s and the convertible 5s. This was the logical accompaniment of the special opera- tions for the rise in St. Paul preferred and common stocks. St Louis and San Francisco incomes and the ad- ) justment 65 were both very strong | N: and so were the Erie issues. The Erie convertible 8s were up nearly two points, the Erie and Jer- sey 63 a point and the generalsds not quite a point. Improvement in New Haven's sit- vation was again reflected in the New York. West Chester and Boston 44s, which are guaranteed by the former road. At 4133 these bonds were up 1 points from where they were seiling only a month and a half ago. Industrial bonds were irres without iar and are. Gen- Traction 1 avtstanding f T s crossed 95. dull Open. Adams Express... 5% Adv Rumley...... 14& Adv Rumley pf H Air Reduction. L Ajax Rubber. .
