His interpretation of Mendelssohn’s Concerto in E- minor (dllegro a ionatae andante ; allegro- vivace,; tie Gluck Melodle and Kreis- ler's”arrangement of the Preludium, E allegro, by Pugnani, were impressive, especially the Gluck Melodle. ‘The success of the afternoon, however, was scored on von Vecsey's own compo- sitions, which opened the second part Caprice No. 5, “La‘ Luns Glissa a Travers les Nuages” (' Through the Clouds), “Cascade,” quoi?” (Why) ‘and “Badinage Impe ” (Saucy Presifiage), were 605-607 7th St. - four, *“Pourquoi” ~EISEMAN’S Bet. F & G Sts. ana leare Sale pertinant” were particularly pleasing. . The “Pourquoj” was played throu out on double nates with a clear and perfect trill at the top. No better de- monstrationof thewonderfultechnique ‘of the violinist was given, “Badinage Impertinant,” played chiefly on the G string, of which .von Vecsey appears to be master, contained many bars of flageolets. His work on this difficult feature of the yviolin was loudly ap- plauded, and he was forced to repeat the number. Following this work, more ability to handle the G string was demonstrated in the “Fantasie Molse,” by Paganini. The round, full and pure tones, re- sembling_those that come from the | cello of Kindler, were amazing. “The Caprice, No. 24,” also by Paganini, closed the program. At the conclu- sion of this remarkable piece the au- dience remained seated and the artist ‘was recalled until he played, as an encore, Godowsky’'s “Danse Macabre.” A student and ardent devotee of the work of the great Paganini, von Vec- sey displayed his love for the Italian's works in_the feeling with which he played. His compositions are built, to some extent, on the same Paganint foundation, yet they exemplify as well the. individuality of the com- poser. The violinist played through- out in a quiet, peaceful pose, and not even in swiftly moving parts of his numbers could he be accused of “play- ing to the gallery.” E. Mr. Black emphasized the point of Scott's training before taking up his literary work. He not only surveyed the beauties of his native Scotland, the lecturer said, but also studied France and Italy for his romance, and his works profited thereby. It was about 1814 when his publish- ers told him that Lord Byron's works were cutting down his sales. The lecturer pointed out that Sir Walter did not rant about, crying out: “Cruel world,” even as you and L but de- cided upon a fishing trip where he could think and plot out themes for his yarns. While rummaging about for his fishing tackle, Sir Walter found three sheets of old yellow pa- per, the skeleton of a story planned Y:&rl b-i(or)e‘. but laid .aside. With silk mixed worsteds.
