Following a tribute to the French heroine, Col. Sherrill said: *“This beau- tiful gift of the Societe des Femmes de France to the National Capital has been arranged only through the self- sacrificing efforts~of the members of that society, and especially of its dis- tinguished president, Mme. Polifeme. Addresses were made by Secretary of War Weeks, who_accepted the 'gift on behalf of the District of Co- lumbia as custodian of the national parks of this city; Ambassador Jus- serand, Mme. Polifeme . and Mrs. George Maynard _Minor, president general of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Prayers were offered by Rev. Charies Wood of the Church of the Covenant and Rev. Pere Waucher. Music was provided by the Marine Band. Acceptance by Mr. Weeid. “I feel greatly honored,” sald Secre- tary Weeks in hix speech of acceptance, “to be the medium through waich the people of the District of Columbia and the entire United States gratefully ac- cept this beautiful statue of Jeanne dAre. It is another evidence of the lasting friendship between the peoples of two great republics. The statue itself is an axact copy of the famous Jeanne d’Arc which stands in front of the Cathedral at Rneims and unques- tionably is one of the finest equestrian statues of modern times. It is a val- uable contribution to the statuary of Washingtdn and greatly adds to the beauty of the city. “I do not think a more appropriate site could have been selected, for from thid" commanding _position the of this heroic maid overlooks o1 great capitals of the world and stands as a monument to the highest attain- ments in human life—faith in God, de- votion to country and a character with- out blemish. Belong to Whole World. “Many individuals have had their day in the life of a nation and have acquired national reputation. A few have rendered such service to man- kind that they have attained inter- national reputation and permanent place in history. Such men and wom- en do not belong to the country of their nativity, but to the whole world. “America has given the world two such men—Washington, whose leader- ship brought victory to our struggle for independence and made possible this great republic, and Lincoln, who saved therepublic from destruction and gave freedom to an enslaved race. France has given mankind Jeanne d'Arc, one of the. most striking and junusual figures in the world’s history. | “That & young woman, hardly of an age and certainly without experience wHTth would have warranted her be- ing placed in a position of unusual responsib! v, could inspire her coun- WASHINGTON, D. Inspired a Nation. “By her undaunted courage, her un- faltering faith, her own strength of character and purity of life, and an wndying devotion to a cause sho deemed just. Jeanne d'Arc Kindle throughout France a flame of entiu- siasm that nothing could resist. A simple, uneducated shepherd girl, her supreme faith and courage inspired a nation. Untrained and unschooled the art of warfare, by an almost s pernaturat influence over her cou trymer she led the armies of France, to victory. “Jeanne d'Arc did not hesitate to dle” for the cause fcr Which she fought, and, although the flames con- sumed her body, they could not de- stroy the spirit of patriotism and de- votipn which dominated her life—a spirit which has thrilled the ages and has ever inspised the French to decds of bravery and sacrifice in defense of their native land. “It is most fitting that this beauti- ful statue of the heroine of the ages should be presented to the District of Columbia by a group of patriotic women of France and America. Since the days of the shepherd kings of Israel men have fought and died for liberty, but women have made the greater sacrifice. “It is they who have died the great- er death in willingly sacrificing_ their sons to the cause of liberty and jus- tice. This bronze figure is not only a monument to one of the world's greatest liberators, but a memorial to a noble and pure woman. “It is my privilege to_express to the members of the Societe des Femmes de France a New York the deep sense of gratitude of the people of Washington for this generous gift, and it is my great honor and personal pleasure to accept on behalf of the District of Columbia this sfatue of Jeanne d'Arc.
