18 T HE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C, FRIDAY, DECEMBER 23, 1921 PARIS WOULD BAN PEDESTRIANS ON STREETS; SUBWAY SUGGESTED PARIS, December 11.—Tha horse soon will be but a memory, so far as the principal thoroughfares of Paris are concerned, if plans of “traffic reformers” are adopted in an effort to disentangle the trafic jams which are daily making the pedestrian’s existence more uncer- tain. These experts purpose to bar all horsedrawn vehicles from the chief traffic” arterles during the day- light hours, leaving the horse only a few ‘hours at night in’ which to jog along. The traffic authorities s Would go further and even banish ordinary human_ beings who are forced to walk. They purpose put- ting them ail underground on a moving sidewalk. In any event those who take a gloomy view of the traffic sitya- tion see one optimistic aspect of it. They say it can't get any worse. Accidents are almost hourly oc- curences on the boulevards, and a tie-up {s the inevitable resuit. The red bands at crossings, con- structed to give protection to the walkers, have proved a failure. Only a heavy rala reveals their presence, and even then the drivers ignore them. “Cruising” taxicabs add to the confusion, and it is further sug- gested that this practice be pro- hibited. The increase in the busses has deprived taxicabs of much business, and they are now forced to solicit business, a thing unnec- espary since 1914. “MISCONDUCT” AT LANDRU TRIAL RESULTS IN PLACING COURT BAN Dy the Associnted Press.
