=14 JOLCANIC ACTIVITY *I CALLED UNRELATED €oncurrent Eruptions During ¥ ast Week Coincidences, ! Say Scientist. the Associated Press. YORK, December 19.—The- s that some scientific relation- p might exist between concurrent Yhlcanic activity reported during the week from Mexico, Argentina, Chile, J81y and Japan were discredited to- y by geological authorities. ifDr. Edmund O. Hovey, geologist of fi: American Museum of Natural tory and a recognized authority f voicanoes and earthquakes, said areas of disturbance were too dely separated to have any con- sction. i.“The eruptions reported.” he said, from volcanoes so far apart that any relationship is only a presump- den. It is bevond belief that the ame cause could exist in each case” 9. Edmund Woodman, professor of sology in New York University, took view that volcanic eruptions oc- curing almost simultaneously in dif- fi’em parts of the world are merely Ancidences. ;" Mountain Buflding Going On. i™1 believe, however. that concur- rent eruptions in Alaska and in the Apdes mountains of South America idve a _certain relationship,” he added, “There is mountain building gaing on in many parts of the world, there are times when we have a series of disturbances extending. for ingtance. from the tip of Canada to QCape Horn. Doubtless the same mighty forces have a hand in each of such eruptions, and this might ac- qdunt for simultaneous outbreaks in itP Chile and Mexico, but would have 19 bearing on_ similar disturbances ift Europe or Asia.” e theory of Prof. Woodman re- nfiuxng a probable relationship be- thgeen disturbances in the same gen-| } range of mountains, as for in< ance the great divide extending g:m the western edge of North and th America, is strengthened by re- piirts received yesterday from Bpenos fres. describing eruptions in the ides and following within a few rs_other reports of disturbances ffpm Mexico. “Phe activity in the Andes resulted ip. considerable damage to the Vil- s of Ozorno, Union and San Pablo, 1 ile the Mexico disturbance was sing grave fears among the ma- ¥ s in the vicinity of Mexico City.
