RESTORED CONFIDENCE SEEN Dispatches From Many Sections Show That B_uyers Are Very Active. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, Ootober 1.—Commerce and industry, on their way back from depression, now have passed the busi- ness graveyard and have ceased to expect some specter of hard times to jump out at them unexpectedly. Res- toration of confidence has been almost universal in widely separated sections of the country, as is shown by busi- ness dispatches received within the last twenty-four hours. If some busi- ness men are still looking apprehen- sively over their shoulders, it is more from habit than from any real anx- lety. Buyvers' psychology, long an ob- stacle in the road back to normal, now is pushing forward both sales and prices. Reductions of prices in many lines did not serve to stimulate - sales, for buyers held off, hoping to take advantage of still further re- ductions. Now that reduced supply and increased demand have stimu- lated prices, buvers are rushing in to purchase before they increase still further. Steel Advances Spread. This tendency is marked in many lines, but in none more plainly than note throughout the Oregon, Wash- ington and California forests, Rentriction Helps Olls. Restriction of production has been efective In the oil industry, and in- creases In price recorded within the last few days give promise of even, more widespread advances. Raflroad freight traffic is increasing, not only through crop and coal movements in- cident to the season, but through large quantities of package freight. Car loadings continue to increase and monthly reports of the carriers show corresponding betterments earnings. Domestic consumption of wool has got back almost to normal. There is a steady demand for all mrades. although the finer fleeces are most active. " Prices are firm with a trend upward indicated. Leather also is in an improved position with manu- facturers entering the market much more freely. Livestock prices, how- ever, are reported exceedingly weak in widely separated sections. The farmers have ‘money. That is shown by increased demand for trac- tors and trucks for farm use. The retail merchants and through them the wholesalers and jobbers are get- ting their share of it and, with that encouragement, retailers are broad- e ont teel and the ‘non-ferrous |€NiNE the scope of their advertising metals. The advance in sheets and | CamPpairns. other of the lighter steel products has E spread to the heavier mill outputs with consequent increase in plant production, employment, railroad ton- nage and coal and coke consumption. The large purchases manufucture, added to wand, are eating up surplus copper, while lead and zine are in im- proved condition. The advance in the price of silver | not only is having an ef activitics of mines is reflected in incre power and demand ton textiles in India, China and other ] countries on a silver currency basis. . The cold, hard facts recorded bv the statistics of the building industry give ample explanation for the tivity in_the lumber industry. wh has set the mills and logging ¢ of the south and Pacific northwest to humming. Orders are exceeding production {or southern lons leaf pine i net nployment Improves. The employment situation continues to improve and it is a healthy im- provement, actuated by a real de- mand for greater output and more workers. It has become evident that plans suggested at the conference on unemployment at Washington, recom- mending rotation of labor, a shorten- ed week and part-time employment, have not aroused iwild enthusiasm ect on the|throughout the country. Manufac- but | turers who have built up small, com- sed asing | pact, efficient working organizations American cot-1; for domestic nd e loath to see them broken up by infroduction of temporary workers on part tinge. Worl; s now employed, who under the plan must give up a part of the weekly pay envelope, feel that they, not the employer, are paying the biil. Unemployed_ men want permanent, not temporafy, jobs and many of them ¢ the plan amounts to little more than giving three cheers for the poor. The permanent jobs are in I mps In spite of the fact that the subscription books do not open until Qctober 3rd we are already fairly showered with requests by the residents of Washington. As gratifying as this is, on the other hand it is not surprising. When one stops to consider the tremendous success of the motor buses in other cities and then when they couple this with the fact that the Washington Rapid Transit System is alréady a success, no wonder they can see the profits that should accrue as the new Washington line is doubled and expanded. . Are you thoroughly familiar with the new motor bus line? Do you know that already it is a success? Do you realize that while we are going into | a big expansion program of operation that no ad- ditional overhead will be necessary? Think what the profits should be. Do you realize that we have been in operation only six months and during that time have carried three-quarters of a million passengers? « Doesn’t this sound like real substantial busi- ness to you? Are you familiar with what the London com- pany pays in the way of dividends? Probably not. Well, it is a little over a million dollars a year! Chicago is meeting with similar success. In Detroit the bus lines are carrying over a million passengers a month. In New York forty million passengers are hauled annually! This gives you some idea—just some faint idea—of what the possible profits should be to every stockholder in these companies.
