By the Xssocjated Press, MELILLA, September- 19.—Spanish : troops concentrated in the Melilla region for operations against rebel- | | Mous Moroccan tribesmen number | i approximately 60,000. All branches of jthe service are rapidly becoming | facclimatized and settled to the hard- | | ships of campaigning. They also are | becoming accustomed to the shells | }and bullets constantly falling. Fre- | quent night marches, as supporting | columns to supply parties, consisting ; ! mostly of members of the forelgn le- * jgion and native troops, have in- stilled the most recently arrived | Spanish troops with the necessary ness for fighting among the ! y and pathless hiils. Troops Kager to Advance. i For some days before the Spanish ' offensive began the troops were anx- { ious to advance, but this was delayed by Gen. Gerenguer, the high commis- , sioner, until everything necessary to | | a successful advance was available. 1 | Munitions, tanks, airplanes, lorries, { field and mountain guns and equip- | ment of all kinds have been arriv- | ing daily in large quantities for some ! time. Virtually everything was ready | when the advance was ordered. The emplacements for the Moroccan | guns in the hills and’ ravines about | Goyrougou are undergoing consta: cha: Whenever the Spanish gun. | pot the Moroccan posicions and | ‘shells anywhere In the vieinity, | the Moroccans immediately shift the ! gun emplacements. Several Moroccan | guns have been mounted on the mili- tary road from Sidix-Hamed to Tahia, | along which munitions are brought through the mountain defiles on mules, Fewer Moroceans in Hills. The number of Moroccans in the hills around Gourougou - apparently has been reduced and they now are estimated to number onlys 500 deter- mined fighters. Parties have been sent into the interior to rouse tribes- men who up to the present have not participated in the fighting. Natives say that Abd-EI-Krin, the Moroccan chieftain, after offering as much re- sistance as possible in the Gourou- gou area, does mnot intend to make another stand until the Spaniards reach the neighborhood of Annual, where he has his headquarters. Suburbs of this city were under heavy bombardment during the days just prior to the offensive which Saturday resulted in the capture of Nador. The civilian ,population dis- played fear almost equaling that: shown during the tragic days of July, when fanatic: Moroccan tribesmen momentarily threatened to enter the city. Meny closed their houses, pre- paring to return to Spain, and many actually left * City I Bombarded. The Moroccans mounted cannon in the ravines nad peaks around Gou- rougou and bombarded the city. The shells fell over a wide area, but near- 1y all of them failed to explode. The suburb of Real Triana, on the southern side of Melilla, was & heavy sufferer and a majority of the people took refuge in Espana Hernadez Park. A dozen shells fell in the vi- cinity of the canning factory on the banks of the Oro river, within 300 yards of the park where the refugees were in camp. Two others struck the artilléery headquarters, another destroyed the clock tower of the Spanish Moroccan exposition and two fell near the Spanish mining com- | pany’s station, which is at present being used as a munitions depot. Survivor of Congo- Expedition. ‘To the Editor of The Star: My attention ‘has been called to the article by Mr. Sterling Heilig that appeared in the feature section of your issue of July 17th, that I failed to see for some reason, though I am a constant reader of your val- uable paper. To_ detract from the name of Mr. Ward, even were such a thing pos- sible, is far from my intention. All I wish is to correct an error.
