HOUSE WHERE WASHINGTON DIRECTED| BATTLE FIRST TO FLY FLAG. | THIS IS WASHINGTON’S HEADQUARTERS AT THE BATTLE OF THE BRANDYWINE, AT WHICH LAFAYETTE WAS WOUNDED. _Washington. Dear Junior Club. Many books have Bean written about ,famous houses, ‘whiat they are made of, who built them and who has lived in them, but I'think that the headquarters of Gen. Washington at the battle of the Brandywine has as good a right to be famous as any of them. I made a long visit to the house, thanks to Mr. Christian Sandersoa. The house is right near Chadd's Ford, Pa., and not 8o very far from Valley Forge, where President Harding visited during the summer. Counting in /Valley Forge, that section of the country is as fa- mous as any, I think, for it was right around that section where the colonial army was nearer to giving up the struggle than at any other time during the war for independ- ence. Over this" house for the first time was flown the flag made in Philadelphia by Betsy Ross. On my trip to New York city and to some places in Connecticut I wanted most of all to see this house. It is up a little from the road which is the Lincoln Highway, and every one who gets near it should pay the place a wisit. Two great trees stand on either side of the little path that leads ‘up to must be 100 years old almost. N. Weyth, the artist, has made a very famous picture of the boy going away to the war with the house as a background. Perhaps you have seen it. The picture shows the boy with his gun, his mother_and starting him off. The mother is Mr. Sanderson’s mother, ‘| who now lives in the house. ‘The headquarters is nearer the morning battle, Mr. Sanderson told ‘|Farmer Brown’s Boy Makes It Up. BY-THORNTON W. BURGESS. You'll find it true, as has been told, That best friends are- the friends of old. —=Striped Chipmun The discovery that it was Farmer Brown's Boy who had been filling up his tunnel in the middle of the path on the edge of the Old Orchard quite upset Striped Chipmunk. Yes, sir, it quife upset him. For a long time he and Farmer Brown’s Boy had been the best of friends. “I didn’t think it of him. I didn't once suspect him. . It didn't once enter my head that he would do such a thing,” said Striped Chipmunk over and over to himself. “I thought he was one of my best friends. but 1 | was mistaken. 1 was so. I—I—I hate {him. Yes, 1 do—1 hate him. On his part Farmer Brown' was feeling quite as badly. must the little chap think of me? said he. *“Of course, he doesn’t know Ighat I didn't know it was his home. sa he thinks 1 did it purposely. 1 ust make it up to hini in some way. {1 certainly must make it up to him.” ‘ Presently he staried back to the ‘Old Orchard. Striped Chipmunk saw m coming down the path and from 1! e old stone wall scolded in a way thit would have done credit to his jcousin Chatterer, the Red Squirrel. who is a_famous scolder. Farmer Bfown's Boy smiled, but it was rather a rueful smile. He didn’t un- derstand what Striped Chipmunk was saying but he knew that it was any- thiag but friendly. He took some Boy "What IDN‘T ONCE ENTER MY HI IT B ‘WO! EDO BUCH A ‘l‘mNG, things from a pocket and put them near that’lttle round hole. Then he went on out of sight. BY ELSIE ROBINSON. | Elizabeth has ~come back from abroad. She is'full of art galleries, “little theaters” salons and super- fority. She says that “Americans are impossible”; that we have no ideals above “hot dogs” and. commefcial ad- vertising; that we are, in short, the boorawheast of the' bourgeois. So she has taken an apartment for the winter, furnished it with one etching, , mfl l&T] i ! s two worm-eaten chairs and a grouch, and settled down to be esthetic and miserable.” Now perhaps Elizabeth is right.
