Big Decrease In A decrease of $100,000,000 in sales to Canada, the department showed, was offset by gains of $124. 000,000 to Mexico and $8,000.009 to Cuba. In South America. gains of $33.000.- | 000 to Argentina, $13.000,000 to Brazil, $9,000,000 to Peru and $5,000.000 to Chile were offset by losses to Colom- bia of $19.000,000 and to Venezuela of $9,000,000, lcaving a net increase of $33,000,000 in the 1921 exports to South America over 1920. Imports from South America de- creased by $375.000,000, or nearly 44 per cent, in the past year, Brazil showed a decrease of $134,000.000. of which_coffee imports accounted for & loss of $89,000,000, although the quan- tity increased by 5,000,000 pounds. Cocoa beans, rubber and hides showed important decreases, the department added. Imports from Argentina de- clined by $133.000,000, hides account- ing for about $60,000,000 and flaxseed for $39.000.000. Chile and Uruguay los $35,000,000 each. LITTLE GERMAN OPPOSITION. South American Conditions Show Little Change for August. Little change was noted in the commercial and economic conditions in the South American republic dur- ing August, according to cabled re- ports from foreign representatives made public today by the bureau of foreign and domestic commerce. Ger- man competition to American trade with Latin America was reported to be lessening in importance. Itogether,” the bureau said, “it appears that many reports of the ruinous German competition in South America havc been exeggerated.” The commercial situation in Ar- gentina remains about the same as Jast month, according to the Buenos Aires report., but “the political sit- uation is very unsettled.” Immigra- tion was said to be increasing, un- rest and strikes decreasing and un- employment threatening. Imports of German goods were small, but the low prices have a discouraging ef- «fect on competition. ¢ Reassuring signs in the Brazilian situation, the Rio de Janeiro report asserted, were in the decrease in im- ports and the strength of the federal government. German import prices were said to be from 25 to 75 per cent cheaper than those from the United States. It is felt that the worst of the dangers of the financial crisis has passed in Chile, the Valparaiso report said, although credit is still difficult to obtain. American sales in Peru are suffering from the exchange sit- uation, the Lima report declared, al- though, owing to cotton sales, a slight improvement is anticipated. The salient features of Mexican economic development during August, according to the Mexico City report, ‘were general attempts to lower pro- duction costs, increased unemploy ment; a continued handicap to busi- ness ‘because of the transportation situation and a stimulating effect of the coming centennial celebration, the importance of which would be in- creased once the oil question is set- tled.
