CHICAGO, August 16.—Downturns in the prices of wheat resuited today from weakness in the New York stock market. Apparent absence of any important export buying counted also as a bearish factor. Trade as a whole lacked volume and values| were easily influenced. Opening quo- ! tations, which varied from unchanged to 1% higher, with September and December 1261 to Wwere followed by a general sethack to well below yesterday's| finish. Corn was easy with wheat. After opening unchanged to 1-3 a 1-4 high- er, including Seplember at 56%as6% 10 57, the market underwent a sag all round. Oats descended to the lowest price level which September delivery has touched since 1912. Big stocks in sight left the market without sup- port. Prices opened % off to %al up. NEW YORK, August 16.—Trading in bonds continued light today, but, aside from the reduced volume of business there were no signs of de- pression which was afecting the share list. The railway group was helped by the latest word from Washington that the Senate finance committee was to hurry its report on the rail- way relief bill. and might have it in before the end of the day. Where prices changed at all in this quarter the changes were upward almost altogether. Chicago, Burling- ton and Quincy joint 61:s were very active and strong at a new high record of 101%. Their companion issues, Great Northern 7s and North- ern Pacific 6s. were in good demand. Gains of a half point occurred* ‘in} Union Pacific first ds. New Haven (I 6s and Kansas City Southern 5s. New York Central debenture 6s at 92% were well up to their high of the year. Chicago Great Western 4s reae three-quarters to 51%. An exception was the Big Four 6s, in which there were transactions at 88%, agaifst 90 Yyesterday. Telephone Bonds Strong. One, of the features in the indus- trial fon was Northwestern Bell Teleplone 7, which made a new high record of 103%. The demand for tele- phone and telegraph issues has been consistent for some time. The North- westerns were later in starting than the Bell Telephone of Pennsylvania, but they are now rapidly closing the remaining gap between the selling prices of the two. New York- Pele-|§ phone 6s, which have also been strong for some time past, rose another haif point today. Duquesne 6s were back to their high of 93, and Brooklyn Edison 7s, se- ries D, were up nearly a point to a new high above 100. Cuban Ameri- can Sugar 8s sold at 10, and were up 1% from the low of last week, de- ite” the uncertain position in the sugar trade. Some Soft Spots. Realizing sales carried the new ‘Western Union 63%s, which were ad- mitted to the regular trading, list for the first time; to 99. Some reflection of the weakness in oil stocks appears in & half-point drop in Sinclair 7%s, .a2k-Marine 6s got below 77 for the first time. One of the incidents of the day was a sale, on the first ac- casion in two mont! in the old Dis- tillers Securities 5s at 6215. This was a decline from the last previous | swite Do #3ls and represented a new low. NEW YORK STOCK EXC P s e ” m.yal‘tx.
