BALTIMORE, Md., July 26.—The Sun says: Pope Benedict XV yesterday ap- pointed Bishop Michael Joseph Curley of 8t. Augustine, Fla., Archpishop of Baltimore to succeed the late James Cardinal Gibbons. Bishop Curley hasebee: of the diocese of St. Al June 30, 1914, when he was el to the bishopric by Pope Pius X on recommendation of Cardinal Gibbons; presiding over a conference of bish- ops in Baltimore. Prior to that he was pastor of a church at Deland, FlIdL He now is only.forty-two years old. in charge Native of Irelan The new archbishop was bdrn on Golden Island, Athlone, Ireland, Octo- ber 12, 1879, a son of Michael and Maria Ward Curley. He received the degree of bachelor of arts from the Royal University of Ireland in 19a0. He pursued his studies in Rome, and was ordained in 1904 after displaying remarkable intellectual attainmnets. In 1904 he came to Florida as a mis- slonary, where he remained until consecrated a bishop. The diocese of St. Augustine is a portion of the Archdioccke of Balti- more, and as its head Bishop Curley periodically came to Baltimore to pay his respects to Cardinal Gibbons and confer with him on diocesan affairs. He is well known to the majority of the clergy of this city, and is ex- tremely popular both for his person- ality and his mental attainments.
