Meyer, whom Gen. Pershing mentioned as “one of the greatest heroes of the war,” was buried yesterday with one of the most elaborate military ceremonies ever accorded a private soldier. At Cantigny, Meyer was killed while offering his body as a living wall to a comrdde armed with an automatic rifle which exterminated a German machine gun nest. He was riddled by bullets. Bullet Through Hand of Man as He Is About to Strike Officer. Detective Charlie Bradley proved his #bility as a marksman yesterday. when he sent a bullet crashing through John Middleton's hand and saved Detective Henry Pratt. Middle- ton held a knife in his hand and was in the act of attacking Pratt when the bullet disabled him. Then there was a lively mix-up, Middleton, colored and thirty-eight years old, fighting /until the two de- tectives and Bradley's partner, De- tective I. E. Keck, worsted him. He was treated at Emergency Hospital for the bullet wound in his hand and several scalp wounds, and locked up to answer numerous charges of assault. Middleton, who resides at 535 24th street, had a row with Emma Bell, colored, at her home, 222 Draper court southwest, and, it {8 charged, had cut her head with an ax. Then he barricaded himself in her house and defled the police. Suffering from a dangerous stab wound.in his left side and back, Ar- thur Raymond Royce, colored, thirty- five years old, 431 Ridge street, was taken to Emergency Hospital ‘early, today.
