NEW YORK, July 16.—Employes at the immigration station on Ellis Isiand have held indignation meetings in protest against the charges made by Immigration Commissioner Fred- erick A. Wallis that wholesale graft- -ing prevailed there, and that immi- grants had been fleeced of five hun- dred thousand dollars. ““The charges of graft are a gross libel on the integrity of the whole of the employes,” sald Deputy Commis- sioner Byron H. Uhl. “We may have a few rascals among our 500 or 600 employes, but as a whole they are honest men and women of proven in- tegrity. “There may be two or three who need to be dismissed and prosecuted for accepting money or for improper conduct. We are working on their cases and in time-they will be elimi- nated. “There is no foundation for _the charge that a general clean-up fis needed. I defy any one to prove the existence of wholesale grafting. and furthermore invite investigation of | Turks Massing Tartar aM these charges. “The employes proved themselves faithful and loyal during the trying times of the war, when the temptation of graft was thrust at them on all sides. 1 have the utmost comfidence in them now and wish to make it clear that they are not grafters and crimi- nals preying upon aliens coming to this country.” & : Commissioner Uhl declared that the employes were so indignant that they might take further action at any time. Commissioner Wallis did not appear at his office at Ellis Island, and it was sald he had gone to New Haven, Conn.
