: THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C, [ GESe ‘o FRIDAY, JUNE 24, 192L 94,822,431 WHITES INUNITED STATES Census Also Reports Ndmber of Negroes, Indians, Chi: nese and Japanese. The country contains 94,822,431 white persons, 10,163,013 negroes, 242,959 Indians, 111, Japanese, 61,686 Chinese and 9,485 others, according to compilations of the census bureau just made public. The Japanese race ex-| ceeded by far the rate of growta in the last ten years of all other*classes. Unofficial estimates of the Increuse'\ in the number of Japanese in the United States, particularly on the| Pacific coast, were borne out in the official tabulation. which revealed a| [ rate of expansion of 53.9 per cent dur- ing the decade of 1910-20. California | [ rbed 30 6 of the total growth of 38,868 Jap: in this period. On! Junuary there ase was di 1y in the states of W 17,358 now muke their nome; Oregor Ltah, Colorado and New etween two and three H | i ington, where | i | thousand ea 1 Expansion Percentages. |i§ The white population showed only &' ion for the decade and the negro, 6.5 per cent. Both the | Indiun and Chinese groups dwindled | . 8.6 per cenl and 13.8 per cent, respec tive,y. The growth in the white popu- | |§ was considerably less than the ) [ 16 per cent expa latio rate for the previous decade. which was 223 per cent. This decline, the | |2 p was due principally | (8 to the marked reduction in immigra- | tion during the world war. An esti- mate based on the excess of births over deaths and on the excess of im- |8 migratioy over emigration showed a E differencd by only a small fraction of | 1 per cent from the total whites KE‘ enumerated. The greatest numer| increase in ' the white population was shown in! (g the east north central division, em- ' ing the states of Ohio. Indiana, Illinots, ~Michigan and Wisconsin, | wiere the increase was 3,011,363, The ; (i middie Atlantic states division had | [ a growth for the decade of 2.761,505. | In the south Atlantic and east and| outh central portions the whites | owed @ combined increase of 3,-§ 6 Migration of Negroes. The rate of increase in the nezr: population, which was not perce: ibly affected by immigration or emi gration, was the lowest on record, Evidence of th€é migration of the negro to tae north and west was found in the figures showing nearly three-fourths of the incre negro population, or 472,413 of the| 635,250 gain, i1n_these sections. A growth of only 162,832, or about one- Tourth, was reported for the south, despite the fact that 85 per cent of the total negro race is still below | 8 the Mason-Dixon line. The percentage increase of negroes in the west was 55.1; in the north, 3.3 per cent, and in the ‘south, 1.9 per cen Michigan, with 60,0 all states in percentage of increase, with 251 per cent. Illinois and Ohio, with increases of per cent, showed further evidence of the northward movement of negroes. Pennsylvania's | negro pcpulation growth for the period was 46.7 per cent, its black race now exceeding in number those of Maryland and Kentucky. Indian Decrease Explained. - Decrease in the Indian race in the ten-year period was probably due in part, it was said, to the ‘enumera- tion, 25 Indians. in 1910 and as whites n of persons having only slig! traces of Indian blovd, © . olisht Of the total decrease in the Indian rac 4, by far the greater part, 18, was in Oklahoma alone. The only pronounced increase was re- | ported for North Carolina—from 7.851 to 11,824.
