« THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C., WEDNESDAY, MAY 18, 1921.’ HELP AND SITUATIONS. ONLY FOURERRORS " INDESERTER LISTS Adjt, Gen. Harris Says But One Mistake Is Depart- ment’s Fault. Adjt. Gen. Harris says that the long lists of men “charged with desertion from the draft” already published, in- stead of being full of errors, actually have included “only four names not rightfully appearing thereon.” These men were Stanley Harrison French, Alfred Daniel Brazil, Howatt H. Mil- linson and William Sutherland Bacon. “One highly desirable result of the Ppublication of the lists, which should not be ignored.” said Gen. Harris, “is that those whose names are included in the list will thereby become official- 1y advised of their status as shown by the War Department records. While the publicity will prove most unwel- come to a man who actually rendered “honorable service, nevertheless it is the War of havingz his coming within the bounds of probability that he might atherwi never have learned of the fact that the records show that he was a deserter. Many Requests for Records. “The depaTtment receives numerous requests from descendants for the records of nfen who served in the revolutionary war: and. similarily, the descendants of men who served in the world war will e requesting statements of their service during the ars, either to gain the bene- fits provided by legislation, to estab- <lish their eligibilit in patriotic organiza to membership ions, or for other purposes. He said the French who registered in Brooklyn at one address was not easily identified @s the man of the same name who enrolled in the Navy on the same day and livi £ at a different address. How Errors Occurred. Brazil registered at New York and entered one of the allied armies, but never reported the fact to the local board or the War Department. As to ‘Bacon, the adjutant general said he dre: #ave entirely different home ad- a es when he registered and while in the service, and the .department was unable to identify him. It is stated he was registered as living at 1400 East 59th street, Chicago, and when commissioned in the Army, gave his address as Macomb, LI Nothing whatever has been found in his record as an officer.” said Gen. Harris, “to indicate that he had reg- “would not, of itself, justify the re istered. or had ever lived or resided in Chicago. CONSTANTINOPLE, May 18.—Neu- trality regulations have been put into operation by the allied high commis- sion here. The proclamation declar- ing that Constantinople, the_ straits and the Gulf of Ismid must be con- sidered neutral territory was handed to the sultan’s government and Greek officials here yesterday. It required that neither the Greeks nor Turks receive enlistments to their forces, that Greek warships must withdraw from the waters covered by the allied order. and that irregular bands fn ‘Thrace and around the Gulf of Ismid must be suppressed. < As the allied troops are few, and there is a distinct bolshevik menace in Asia Minor, propositions have been made to the allied high commission that Gen. Wrangel’s army, which has been here since it was driven out of the Crimea, be given the task of po- licing the straits and the Constanti- nople zone. _— CRITICISES HENRY FORD.
